Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Hi, my name is Tim and I have been T1 for 54 years. I have been a plumber for most of my working life though I have worked in oil exploration and electronics. I grew up near Salisbury in Wiltshire, where a long walk was always needed to catch a bus or go to the village shop. I always loved walking until an accident plus diabetes, robbed me of my lower legs and made walking a bit of a problem.

Welcome to this sometimes merry band, Tim!

I can see why walking could be a prob - but is there a specific reason you've joined us now? Incidentally, DUK has this year 'got going' with exercise probs for any & all people with D who want to get themselves going a bit more regularly, with better exercise regimes, not necessarily needing legs to do them! so we can signpost you to that if you'd like us to.

Anything you might need or want, speak up and we'll try and offer some assistance.

Welcome to the forum @Tim Evans. Glad to have you on board.
Sorry to hear of your recent issues. How are you managing after the amputations?

How do you manage your diabetes: pens or pump, which insulin(s)?
this info can help us to adapt our answers.

I look forward to hearing more from you.

Hi and thanks for the welcome. I use Novo Rapid and Tresiba to control my blood sugars and a carb counting diet system too. I have had type 1 since I was six and have seen every change in treatment so far, including the artificial pancreas developed by George Alberti and Giff Batstone. I had a kidney transplant 22 years ago and I am happy to say that it is going well, I used to work as a plumber until a fall brought my job to an end, I went to hospital with a broken ankle and several broken toes, I was put in a bed with an inflatable mattress which gently removed the skin on my heel as it inflated, MRSA found a way in and I lost my foot. My other foot lost all its toes and about half of its mass, years later I had to have that foot removed because the pain became too great. I now find it hard to walk far and I use two sticks, both white thanks to a stroke that destroyed the optic nerve in my left eye, which make seeing enough to balance a little difficult.
I swam before the covid problems and now hope to start again and lose some weight. I was a member of the BDA many years ago, I left when the name was changed and decided to join again to hopefully pick up some recipes and maybe make some friends too.

Hi and welcome from me too

It sounds like you have some serious challenges but you also sound like a very positive person who is prepared to meet them.... Good for you.
If you are here to make friends, I wonder if you might like to join the "Group 7-day waking average" thread. We no longer bother about averages but we check in each morning.... or whenever we have time... with our waking BG reading and share a bit of info about our plans for the day, the weather, complaints about the frustration of unpredictable BG levels and generally have a bit of banter. It is a sort of virtual diabetes coffee morning. We are a friendly bunch, so if you fancy joining us, click on the link below and post your waking reading and any other info. If you read the most recent few pages you will get an idea of how it works and you will soon get to know us all better and vice versa. Lots of people with different interests and different types of diabetes. All welcome. Maybe see you there...
