Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
I have had Type I diabetes since 1982 and have been a "life" member of Diabetes UK for many years, although this is the first time that I have registered on this site.
Why, you may ask?
Well, for many years diabetes has been an unwanted intrusion in my life, so the last thing I wanted was to spend any more time than necessary surrounding myself in it, or associating with others with similar conditions. I used to get quite irritated by the "doom & gloom" approach adopted by the media and, let it be said, Diabetes UK themselves!
I consider myself lucky in that my diabetes has always been stable; any problems that I have had have usually been down to my own lack of care. Over the last few years I have come to realise that tighter control now will reduce difficulties in later life - something that is easy to forget when you are young and invincible.
Currently striving for a sub-7 hBA1c, although low thyroid function doesn't help. Still, fine-tuning of the thyroxine medication, regular blood tests and Christmas naughties over & done with should hopefully restore a smile to my medical teams' faces.
I have got a lot of experiences to share with others (expect a thread soon on hospitals and dibetes consultants (aarrgh!) - especially now that I am more disposed to joining the diabetes community.

Hi there and a warm welcome to the forum Chris, so pleased you have joined the forum you wont regret it.

Hi Chris, welcome to the forum 🙂 Great that you've decided to join us - we are not 'gloom and doom' here - quite the opposite, so I hope you'll enjoy being here 🙂 I look forward to hearing more from you, and hopefully we can help you achieve that sub-7 HbA1c! 🙂

welcome to the forum ...best place to be 🙂

Hi Chris. Welcome 🙂

Your story is a familiar one. 😉

Hi Chris, I'm looking forward to hearing about your experiences!

Have you heard about the forum meet in Oxford that's coming up?

Take care 🙂

hi Chris... welcome to the forum 🙂 I'm new here too but already I've settled in and feel right at home :D hope you do too

Welcome, I look forward to your contribution...........................🙂

Hi Chris and welcome to the forum🙂

Thank you for all the "welcome" messages.
Reading through the forums makes me feel quite inadequate, considering my HbA1c's have been 7.something for as long as I can remember :-(
My diabetes, although fairly stable, occasionally surprises me: go to bed on 7 or 8, only to test the following morning and get 12/13/14/15 ....
Alternatively, finish the day on >10, only to wake up at 01:00 to 01:30 with a full-blown hypo (<2)!
I am often challenged by my wife to test my blood: "if you're not low, then you'll get a slap!" - low sugar commonly makes me a bit short/irritable.
It is easy to forget that we are human 1st - non-diabetics/healthcare professionals don't live their lives free from sin either!

Hi Fandange and thanks for your warm welcome.
Much against my previous leaning, I have decided to try and attend the Oxford meet (separate reply left on main thread, started by Northerner). Don't know what to expect as I have tended to avoid the company of other diabetics in the past! You never know, I might actually enjoy it? Even stranger, others may not hate me...
