I have had Type I diabetes since 1982 and have been a "life" member of Diabetes UK for many years, although this is the first time that I have registered on this site.
Why, you may ask?
Well, for many years diabetes has been an unwanted intrusion in my life, so the last thing I wanted was to spend any more time than necessary surrounding myself in it, or associating with others with similar conditions. I used to get quite irritated by the "doom & gloom" approach adopted by the media and, let it be said, Diabetes UK themselves!
I consider myself lucky in that my diabetes has always been stable; any problems that I have had have usually been down to my own lack of care. Over the last few years I have come to realise that tighter control now will reduce difficulties in later life - something that is easy to forget when you are young and invincible.
Currently striving for a sub-7 hBA1c, although low thyroid function doesn't help. Still, fine-tuning of the thyroxine medication, regular blood tests and Christmas naughties over & done with should hopefully restore a smile to my medical teams' faces.
I have got a lot of experiences to share with others (expect a thread soon on hospitals and dibetes consultants (aarrgh!) - especially now that I am more disposed to joining the diabetes community.
