Hi,

I have been recently (3 weeks ago) diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and am finding it hard to get my head round everything ???

I have completely changed my diet over the last three weeks and tried to exercise more when possible. Last night at approx 7pm I became so tired and felt shattered so ended up in bed by 8pm !!!

Can anyone tell me if this is normal ? Im starting to get stressed about Xmas what can I eat what can't I eat also can I drink alcohol ????

Welcome to the forum.......

Sorry to hear about your diagnosis, there are lots of type 2s on here that can point you in the right direction for valuable information....

I wouldnt worry too much about christmas at this stage as its so close......I would recommend getting a blood meter so you can start investigating what foods and drinks are best for your sugar levels........it is important to treat yourself from time to time...........moderately....

Ask all the question you need............

Hi Royston I'm a newbie too and like you I am still trying to get my head round everything. I was diagnosed type 2 about a month ago and was just thrown in the deep end with no information. People on here have been brilliant and I have already been given lots of good advice, now I start asking questions lol Good luck to you with luck we'll ll learn together.

Hi there Royston, welcome to the forum.

Yes, what you're experiencing is very normal. It takes a while for the body to get used to the lower blood glucose levels. The symptoms should diminish over time, but don't expect it to completely disappear overnight. It took me several months to be completely free of them. But it didn't stop me exercising each day and sorting my diet out and I'm now feeling pretty hunkey dorey.

By the way, are you on diet and exercise only or have you been started on the medication?

Regarding what you can eat and drink? Well, I think novorapidboi has it about right. But it largely depends on how you react to different carbohydrates now. You may need to reduce the portions from what you were used to though. Alcohol is a little trickier, because although some drinks contain more carb than others, the alcohol has the effect of stopping your liver from topping your blood glucose levels up (which may sound good, but could help cause a hypo). As with most things, enjoy it in moderation!

Andy 🙂

Hi Andy,

Thanks for the response, to answer your question they have put me on BP tablets and another one to help blood sugar levels. I am finding it pretty daunting with everything
but am determined to stick to a new regime.

I will take everything in moderation over Xmas. Could you advise as im getting confused about carbs (I have got some pasta for dinner at work and don't know whether to eat it now) ????

Have they started you on metformin for the blood sugar levels?

Your question regarding the pasta is rather difficult to answer. The ideal would be to test yourself prior to eating it and then after 2hrs test again. For good control, you should be 4-7mmol/L before and 7-9mmol/L 2hrs after.

Anyway, it'll be worth reading though the following link. That should help resolve some of your questions.

Hi

Welcome to the forum.

I'm also newly confused.

Hi Royston and welcome.

I was diagnosed 4 weeks ago with Type 2. I was immediately put on Metformin. First week only 500mg then increased to 1000mg the following week. There is an awful lot of information to get your head around, the main thing with me, is forgetting to stock up on loads of salads and veggies as I tend to forget then wonder "What can I eat."

What dosage have you been put on? I've ordered the recommended books and also some cookery books by Anthony Worral Thomson. I have lost weight since starting on the Metfomin, but personally, I think it's the change in diet and exercise levels which have made the biggest difference.

Don't be afraid to ask questions, as you're amongst friends here. The advice given, as been invaluable and you're talking to people with years of experience.

Christmas is going to be a challenge! For the record, I treat myself to a couple of glasses of red wine when I fancy as you have to have something to chill out with! I was going to start with Stilton and broccoli soup, followed by chicken with the trimmings, only I'll pass on the parsnips, but will allow myself one or two roasties. If you look around, you'll find plenty of sweet ideas made with Splenda. I'm going to see what I can come up with. Avoiding the tempation of chokkies will be the worst part.

Donna x🙂
