Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
My name is Marion and I have Type 1 diabetes. I have had this for 58 years and am lucky that I do not suffer from many associated issues. Things have changed a great deal since 1966 and I’m very grateful for all the progress made. If I can help in any way, I will. Keep healthy and well

Welcome @Maz65 🙂 I bet things have changed a lot in that time! Are you on injections or a pump?

I’m on injections. In the ‘old’ days, it was one a day but with progress, it’s now four. I’m on Humalog and Tresiba and have a Freestyle Libre. I probably come far down the list of updates

Hi and welcome from me too. Good to have your extensive experience to add to the forum and hope that you will also perhaps benefit from the "hive mind" yourself because anyday can be a school day with diabetes. Nothing stays the same for long and there is always something new to learn. Great that you have not suffered any complications so far and long may that continue.
Have you had Libre long? How do you find it works for you? It seems to be pretty reliable for some but others find it a bit of a random number generator. Hope you are one of the former like me. I love my Libre!

Hello @Maz65 and welcome to the Forum.

I'm a relative newcomer to this D malarkey, only 4 yrs in and I am also a Tresiba user, which happens to suit me. I appreciate its stability (which others sometimes decribe as inflexibility - since they want to be constantly altering their basal within their daily routines). May I ask how long you have been using Tresiba?

I know nothing about Humalog, having been on NovoRapid from the start. My Consultant has suggested I go onto Fiasp to reduce the lag that exists with Novo(not so)Rapid; I'm still contemplating that. I've got used to what I know.

Welcome to the forum @Maz65

We have a fair few long-term pancreas impersonators on the forum, so you are in good company.

Look forward to hearing more of your story over the coming weeks and months 🙂

Hello and welcome @Maz65 glad you’ve joined us.

Good to hear diabetes has been relatively kind to you over the past 58 years & you’ve avoided complications, long may that continue. 🙂

Do you remember having to boil glass syringes? And luer lock needles? Keeping syringes and needles in methylated spirit?

I’ve had my Libre for coming up 2 years and at first I felt as though I was wearing a tag and that everything I did was being watched. I suppose this was partly because I was told many years ago that “you are in charge of your diabetes - don’t let diabetes rule you”. I have now accepted it as a useful piece of technology and progress . Happy with it

I certainly remember the boiling up of syringes and the drawing up of Lente insulin via large Luer needles then swapping for slightly smaller needles! Clinitest tablets for urine testing and Acetest for ketones. Wow - a good few years ago and I remember my first day of being diagnosed and three weeks in hospital

Hello there. I have probably been on Tresiba for coming up 10 years and have no issues with it. I, too, like its stability. I do tweak my basal insulin to try and keep my readings in range, but we all have highs and lows, which are picked up by the Libre. Do you have one of these?

Hello again @Maz65, I also tweak my Tresiba periodically, particularly in the transition betwen spring and summer and back again for winter. Maybe 4 times in a year altogether.

I had Libre 2 almost 12 months after my Whipple. I'm actually grateful for the 12 months with MDI and only FPs to help - although my BG management was simply dreadful - just because I know how to manage when the tech fails. A little earlier, out of the blue, my GP decided to restrict my test strips, supported by my then DSN. My protest and lengthy email pointing out this was less than sensible brought their embarrassment, rapidly followed by capitulation about test strips PLUS Libre 2 was authorised. That became a major aid for my new opportunity to manage better and my HbA1c rapidly improved. I'm now using the Dexcom G7, since over the next 12+ months it became clear that my body and Libre 2 were far from compatible. I now know there is a CGM that works for me; G7 is accurate and the sensors are very reliable and suddenly I've found there can be a world where minimal FPs are needed - my CGM can be trusted. The G7 app on my phone has crashed a few times, which is a bore ... but I also have one of their handheld Receivers and that continues on regardless of what the app is doing. Fortunately.

I make no claim that I've now got this all under control - far from that but I am happy that when nothing is quite working I am content with myself and my ability to not panic, accept that tomorrow is another day with yesterday left behind!

Sounds to me that you are doing a good job and good for you. You are in charge of your diabetes and never forget that. As long as you know how to tweak when necessary, you’ve got control
