Hi,

Type 2 diabetic here, diagnosed when I was admitted to hospital. I was put straight on to insulin, probably because they had to get my blood sugar levels under control quickly.

I currently take 10 units in the morning and before my evening meal, with blood sugar levels usually between 5 and 7. I have reduced my dose from 16 units gradually, this is probably down to a change in diet, and I am starting to get used to a low sugar / reduced carb diet 😉 but I really miss tunnucks caramel bars and find watching the great British bake off an act of S&M.

I have a meeting with my diabetic nurse next week, up until now I've been pretty much left alone to decide what to do for myself. I think they'll probably want to put me on metaformin soon, and I'm concerned that will take a couple of weeks to kick in and stabilise my BS levels.

I've been reading this forum for a while and decided I really should register and say hello! Like northerner, I am a Sheffield lad living on the south coast.

Cheers n beers

Sean

Hi Sean, welcome to the forum 🙂 Interesting that you were put straight onto insulin - what insulin is it? It seems to be doing the trick for you if it is giving you levels in the 5-7 range. It's possible that they may put you on metfomin, but I would think it is best to keep you on the insulin if you are on a total daily dose of 20 units. Why were you admitted to hospital, was it because you were ill with undiagnosed diabetes, or was it something else and they diagnosed you at the same time? It's unusual, but not uncommon for a Type 2 to be put straight onto insulin, so I'm just wondering if you are actually Type 1? I seem to be saying that to so many people here lately!

I know how you feel about Bake Off, there's quite a few of us watch and drool 😱 As for the Tunnocks - well, maybe for the occasional treat, if eaten as part of a meal and with a bit of a walk afterwards, no reason you should completely deny yourself 🙂

Are you missing Sheffield as much as me? I realised the other day I've lived down here nearly 18 years now! 😱

Please ask any questions you have, I look forward to hearing more from you .

Hi Sean good to meet you and welcome to the forum. Hope you can get any help you need here but sounds like you are doing a great job managing your diabetes already. Anyone from Sheffields sound in my book !! (I am from near Doncaster and now live in Scotland)....Tintin

Hi northerner,

It's a bit of a gruesome tale that shows you shouldn't ignore health problems as most men usually do.

It started with a bad bout of man flu, obviously women won't understand this :D, that really knocked me out for a few days and lowered my immune system. I then got a small boil on the top of my thigh, which as a typical man I ignored and thought would get better.

A manic time at work, as I tried to prepare for a boys week away in Iceland and still ignoring the boil. When I got to Iceland the boil went manic and I started to feel really unwell. It was the May bank holiday so I just jumped a flight home early and went straight to A&E. I was immediately admitted and it turns out the infection was flesh eating, so a chunk of my thigh was removed a few hours later.

Blood tests showed my BS levels were very high, although no one told me how high and this needed to be bought under control ASAP to help the healing of my wound and fight infection, hence the insulin. They are not sure if i had diabetes before the flu/infection or that effected my pancreas and caused it.

When I was discharged they put me on insulatard. And I've been on it since. Working with the diabetic nurse at the hospital we reduced the dose down gradually but I've hit a wall where if I drop to 8 units I get Bs levels at up around 9-12 and I'm not really comfortable with those.

So the moral of the story is DON'T ignore medical problems and go and see your GP!

On the subject of Sheffield, I still have family and friends up there and get up a couple of times a year. I find I miss it, until I get there and then am happy I moved 18 years ago. The roads are terrible, pot holes everywhere the size of the Grand Canyon! 😡

Wow, that's quite a tale 😱 It would be worth enquiring about the possibility of a misdiagnosis as (apart from the flesh-eating infection!) your story has similarities with my own - horrible stomach virus, tried to man it out over a Bank Holiday weekend, ended up in A&E and diagnosed with diabetic ketoacidosis and Type 1 diabetes.

I think Insulatard os a 'basal' insulin i.e. a slow-acting background insulin. Have you tried testing before and 1-2 hours after eating? It would be interesting to know what sort of levels you are getting as your food peaks.

I've only been back to Sheffield once, 10 years after leaving - the city had changed so much! I mostly miss having the Peak District on the doorstep, I used to spend hours running all over it! 🙂

Welcome macg3! What a story! Sounds horrific. Although as a woman I cannot imagine either the man flu or leaving a flesh eating wound to fester :D😱. Glad you are feeling better. Would try to see about getting tested for type 1 though, does sound like Northerner's story.

Hi Sean and welcome 🙂

That sounds quite a grim way to get diagnosed 😱. I hope things are healing and improving for you now.

I lived in Sheffield for a few happy years but not been back for ages, I heard the Hole in the road had gone to make way for trams -what a loss to the city!

Hi Sean wishing you a warm welcome.funny you should mention the bake off i watched it on i player the other night torture lol.

Bloomin eck - flesh-eating infection?! Sounds very sci-fi.😱 Glad to hear you're on the mend. Welcome to the forum.🙂
