Hi there peeps, long time reader and thought it was about time I posted 😛

Was diagnosed in Dec 2009 and am currently on 2 metformins 3 times a day which seemed to be working up to a point, but am having problems with morning lvls at the moment. Seems to be 10-13 no matter what I do and quite often around 3pm to 4pm can have dropped to 5-7. :/ do have some glikazides (bad sp) but have been told they can contribute to weight gain? something I cant really afford at the moment.

Last HBA1C if I recall was 8.3/8.5 so not amazing and the "pen" has been mentioned if I cant get it down. Have a friend who uses it and is fine but still if at all possible to avoid.

Hoping this gets easier as I seem to do nothing but dwell on it specially at work which isnt helping 😡 but enough of that.

Ok didnt mean for this post to be so long lol sooooo Hello 🙂

Welcome from de-lurking Retrograde 😉

Yeah, Gliclazide can cause weight gain as a side effect. I believe Byette/Exenatide and Victoza/Liraglutide are better in that respect.

Hi Retrograde! Nice to see you posting 🙂
Don't be put off of trying new meds, not all will cause weight gain. The positive side of new meds will be that if your levels improve then so will your energy levels and you hopefully wont worry about things as much which in turn will bring your levels down 🙂

Hope to hear more from you, and don't worry about long posts, you should see some of mine 😱

Step forward from the shadows Retrograde, Welcome............:D

Hi Retrograde and a warm welcome to the forum.

Hi Retrogade, good to see you posting 🙂 When you say the 'pen', do you mean insulin? As mentioned, Byetta or Victoza are possibly alternatives to insulin and can help with weight loss so might be worth asking your doctor about. 🙂

Thanks for the messages 🙂

And yeah meant insulin. Have been told very very briefly about victoza but seems to differ by what nurse I see. One says we can look into victoza as an option, but next nurse says if you dont get lower its on to the insulin.

And those other meds you mention ive never heard off lol

To be honest I still feel in the dark about a lot of it. Although did buy one of the books that was mentioned on the forum which I need to read. Diabetes the first year I think?

I hate the way that some HCPs use insulin as though it's a threat and represents some kind of failure on the patient's part - if it's needed, it's needed, there's no need to make people feel bad because they need it, grrr!

Victoza is fairly new (and expensive) so there may not be widespread knowledge about it as yet. Byetta is a similar drug - both are injectable and improve the way your body uses its own insulin (simply put). You should definitely read the book! 🙂
