Relationship to Diabetes
At risk of diabetes
It's been a strange couple of weeks. I guess I have a few symptoms suggesting diabetes. But...for almost 30 years I have had neuphotic syndrome. No real reason given why so it could be bad luck. Genetic but meds given have mostly been for immune system issues.

Within the time period I was prescribed water tablets(in time they have been discontinued)Eventually Statins and my cholesterol is fine. Blood pressure tablets but my BP is doing well and controlled.

That leaves a daily 5mg steroid Prednislone and 50mg Azathioprine tablet. After almost 30 years they have been reducing these and are happy with my kidney function. Blood tests that are usually happen every 3mths. I assume they will try and get me off them altogether.

Well just over two weeks ago Bloods were taken and they checked my sugars. I was told 48 I am a diabetic. My reading was 43 so pre diabetic.

Hardly given any information. Or advice. At best told the last time I was tested was four years ago. The next test? In a year's time. A good sign?

Well I have been kindly given access to a glucose machine. Still trying to understand it.

In the meantime I have strips to dip in urine.
Recent tests are positive no sign of sugar or protein.

So just bad luck or a hiccup recently I don't know.

I have never been much of a sweet, biscuit, cake eater or drinker. I have Mostly done all the right things. So now I am in unknown territory. On a learning curve. Trying not to worry. Hopefully all will be well.

The test? I suppose I fitted the age when they do them as a matter of course. I have talked to am amazing amount of people since and been surprised how many diabetics are around me. Managing the condition well. Coping. Who have reversed it. Or it's disappeared.

Wishing you all well and looking forward to reading your posts, ideas and experiences.

Welcome to the forum @Gildersleeve

Steroids can be very helpful in treating many conditions - but they do have the added effect of raising glucose levels - which can put a metabolism that is beginning to struggle a little under extra stress, and tip it over into diabetes.

It seems like you are just at the bottom edge of the ‘diabetes zone’, and a few fairly minor tweaks might help to steer your numbers in the right direction - especially if you can come off the steroids.

We have quite a few who have been diagnosed with much higher glucose levels who have been able to reduce their HbA1c below the diagnostic threshold without tablets, to put their diabetes in ‘remission’ (though they retain their diagnosis).

Welcome to the forum. It sounds as if you are just on that cusp /borderline of diabetes. People often have found that steroids increase blood glucose so they need to be keeping a watchful eye on their carbohydrate intake.
Urine dip sticks are of limited use as glucose is not normally excreted in urine unless levels are quite high or unless you are taking medication which is designed to do that.
Many people think it is all about sweet things but it is also all carbohydrates that convert to glucose, the big hitters are potatoes, rice, pasta, breakfast cereals, tropical fruits. But basing meals on meat, fish, eggs, cheese, dairy, vegetables, salads and fruit like berries still gives you plenty of options.
This link has good infromation, some meal plans for some ideas. https://lowcarbfreshwell.com/
