Hi I have been T2 for 6 years been managed well on vegan diet. Until 6 months ago when life got in the way. Few deaths in family legal costs etc. so I did what they call I think Diabetes Burn out basically ate what I wanted and had time to eat.

Fast forward to now bloods very high medications not working with my delicate tummy. So now with specialist diabetes nurses and about to start a base insulin……

Worried as I have tried hard last month to help get weight down been doing well. Now looks like could all go back on plus terrified of needles. They blow my veins everytime bloods due.

Insulin doesn't guarantee weight gain. And the standard needles are really small (4mm long and very thin), so quite different to those used for taking blood samples, vaccines, etc.

Mate - you're attempting to AVOID your veins when injecting insulin, not deliberately try and hit one!

Thank you so much. Yes they have done prescriptions for 4mm and pen to use once a day but waiting for appointment to see how to do these. Appreciate your reply as was panicking wondering how I will cope

lol yes it’s the yearly blood tests that everytime blow my veins making a right mess. A problem I have had since my stroke. Last month bruised 8” all round the looks I got while shopping….

Don’t panic @Michelle kaleesi It won’t be as bad as you think, I’m sure. I have a needle phobia so I’m hardly a fan of injections but the pen needles are very, very thin.

Here’s some information about injecting and a short video:

Sorry to hear about the tricky time you have been having with diabetes burnout :(

Great to hear you’ve been able to lose some weight and have been feeling like you are doing better.

It’s quite natural to feel apprehensive about the suggestion of starting insulin, and most of us who have trod that path before you were’t overly keen on needles either!

As others have said, the modern needles are almost comedically small. So the likelihood is you’ll be fine. But if you do struggle, there are other possible options, including ‘autoshielded’ needles that you don’t have to see.
