Hi,

My husband has just been diagnosed with Type 2. He is currently testing himself 4x a day and his BG levels are gradually coming down from 20+ to between 12 and 16.

Neither of us are great at cooking and planning meals, any suggestions for low carb/sugar snacks? I have swapped his sugar for sweetener (3-4 spoons per cup of tea😱) and am cutting down on potatoes/chips etc but he works shifts and takes sandwiches every day.

All a bit confusing, I have ordered a couple of books from reading on here but any hints/tips welcome.

BTW if he was previously 20's and now low teens could he feel as though he is having a hypo? He said he felt dizzy and cold yesterday and went for a bath to warm up, then got grumpy 'cos I asked him to phone when he got out 🙄

Welcome to the forum; as you've been reading various posts you presumably know that we're a friendly and helpful lot. 🙂

This is quite possible and indeed very likely ? it's called a "phantom hypo" and is caused by the body being used to high BG levels, hence now regards normal levels as "low". This will fade once his levels come under control, although it can still be caused by levels dropping too rapidly.

Hello and welcome. You're already heading down the right road by reducing carbs and not just sugar. I've learned to do without spuds of any kind most days, and load up my plate with extra veg.

Roasted butternut squash is a nice alternative to potatoes/parsnips. Mashed cauliflower is a pleasant alternative to mashed potato. You can get carb-free noodles in Holland & Barratt, several brands are available.

For sandwiches, start by buying small loaves instead of large ones so the slices are smaller, and doubling up on the protein fillings.

Hi sanrossscot 🙂

The Gretchen Becker book recommended in the newbies useful links thread is very good.
