I was diagnosed in 96 when I weas 9. I have had an up and down time over the years. I was very controlled throughout my youth but then as I got to University everything got a bit out of control. The past few years I have really tried to change me regime and regularly blood test, carbohydrate count and follow my doctors advice. At the moment nothing seems to be working no matter how hard I try. I regularly have hypos and do not get much awareness anymore and struggle to go to the gym without any worries.

Cannot wait to feel back in control. I know it is going to be hard work but I am due to get a pump in the next 6 months, I'm excited but apprehensive.

I do not know many people with Diabetes other than some of the students I teach. So was really excited to find this site on a Twitter link 🙂 I cannot believe I only just realised there may be support on the net for diabetics :D

Hi Subdanni, welcome to the forum 🙂 What insulin are you on currently? Have you ever done any basal testing? I'm just wondering if this may lie at the heart of your problems with control.

There's lots of friendly people here with many years experience and it can be really useful exchanging views and sharing experiences wtih others who know where you are coming from, so please join in wherever takes your fancy! 🙂

Hi SUbdanni. Welcome 🙂

Don't want to jump in with a nasty, but do you drive ?

If so, they would need to know about your hypos and loss of awareness. I assume you'll have discussed it with your DSN though, so won't push the point. 🙂

Hopefully, you can pick up plenty of tips, especially from the pumpers, which will help to regain some control.🙂

Sorry to laugh, it's amazing how many people don't. And in my case, for years whenever I typed diabetes into Google, all I got was a load of old baloney eg cinnamon was going to cure it. Or American forums; who knew then that you divided their BG measurements by 18 to get it in English? Yep ..... so I deliberately avoided the internet like the plague .....

So it wasn't until the NHS completely let me down, constantly accusing me of doing it wrong, but not being able to tell me WHAT I was doing wrong, that I eventually decided in 2007 that Sod you - I am NOT doing it wrong. I'll sort meself out then .....

Well I didn't, not on my own - but I found people in Cyberspace that could and did help me. (Notably 3 specific people from Cornwall, Croydon and Canada!) And with all that education and since the pump last year, my A1c is now 6.5 .......

Sooooo - Can you put your finger on what do you need help with? - do you carb count? have you been on a course for that? do you know the correct way to test your basal rates? do you know your carb ratio and your correction rate?

hi Subdanni.... welcome to the forum x

Subdanni hi and a warm welcome to the forum

Welcome Subdanni

Sound like you have found a supportive diabetes clinic, as you say you're getting a pump within 6 months. Hope that helps to bring back your hypo awareness so you can enjoy going to gym again. As other have said, lack of hypo awareness means that you shouldn't be driving, but perhaps you don't?

Anyway, do ask away. There is a Pumping section for when you want to know personal experiences of that.

My consultant is really supportive so that is good, I am in regular contact. I went on Carb counting course and have just downloaded carbs and cals on my phone. Everything was steady until I joined the gym in October because the insulin to carb ratio has now changed so I need much less insulin. Therefore what I would have injected before is much less. If I don't go to the gym everything is fine, the doctor advised taking no fast acting insulin after the gym which seems to be working well and so far so good. He has also dramatically reduced my Basal rate. I am on Lantus and Apidra but have recently swapped to Humalog. Over Christmas without the assition of the gym everything was great. I know I could just leave the gym for a few months but on the new units of insulin to carbs it seems to be working. Yes I look forward to getting involved 😉

Hi and welcome SD

When do you visit the gym? (how often/what time of day/how close to a meal etc). There should be a way of evaluating what effect it has on you and sorting out a basic approach that works. There are quite a few active types in the boards so someone ay well have some tips/ideas to give you food for thought.
