Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
I'm a recently diagnosed Type 2 diabetic.
diagnosed at the beginning of April 2010, and prescribed Metformin 3 times a day. just had a 3-month check, and my levels are down from 13 to around 10, and have been told to continue on metformin for next 3 months. I have a slight embarrassing problem, in that one of the side-effects of metformin is apparently a rather "explosive" wind problem. In my case, it seems to be worse than that! I do suffer wind anyway, in the normal scheme of things, but taking metformin seems to make this worse, sometimes to a quite debilitating way. Has anyone else experienced this, i have to admit there have been times when I've stopped taking the tablets cos the side effects are so violent. Haven't mentioned it to the doctor, as everything I've read suggests that the side effects subside after a while - but 3 month seems a long while!
Other than that everything seems ok. I've tried to change to a sugar-free diet, and eat the recommended stuff that all the reputable agencies suggest. So, if my levels have come down from 13 to around 10 in about 3 months is that a reasonable reduction - i do manage some occasional exercise to help as well.
Anyway, would love to hear from others on here, nice to know that there's a forum where you can talk to people who understand..

Hi amarwa, welcome to the forum 🙂 As Steff suggests, there is a slow-release form of metformin called Glucophage SR, so it is definitely worth telling the doctor about this if you are finding the ordinary stuff intolerable at times. Don't suffer unnecessarily! Many people feel uncomfortable or shy of letting their doctors know about problems they are having, feeling that it is a minor inconvenience and don't want to 'bother' them with it, but you will learn that sometimes you have to stick to your guns and make sure you get the absolute best you can out of your healthcare! We'll be here to support you all the way and lend you strength, so don't feel you are alone in this 🙂

Your HbA1c reduction is good - too rapid a reduction can present problems of its own, so the rate at which yours has declined is fine. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have, or just to have a good old moan! :D

thanks for those comments, they were really helpful - didn't even know there were slow-release or liquid alternatives to metformin. will probably speak to doctor as he seems approachable. Having said that, I have been slightly horrified by the different reactions people get from their GP's and nurses - I had assumed that medical experts know all about diabetes (it's been around for sometime) and so treatment was fairly straightforward - it appears not! Am so glad I found this forum - have the feeling I may be using it quite often!

Have got a couple of "diabetic" cookbooks already, which surprised even me as I can't cook! - shows how seriously I'm taking this!
There's obviously a lot of info in this site, I look forward to picking out the really useful information.

Here are a few things to get you started:

Maggie Davey's letter to newly diagnosed Type 2s:

and also Jennifer's good advice:

Plus, a book I always recommend, as do many others here: Type 2 Diabetes: The First Year by Gretchen Becker (amazon link)

Have a look in 'Recommended Books' for reviews of other books available. Particularly useful are the GI and GL Diet books. 🙂

Hi amarwa, your half way there by taking it seriously, enjoy your free prescriptions for everything medical!.

I presume you are taking the Metformin with food, it makes a difference. I only seem to suffer in the night (and I thought the wife was nicking the duvet🙄)
