Hi Folks

I have just been advised that I will be going onto Insulin on 16th September 2013. I am a little apprehensive and not quite sure what it all involves but have not spoken to the health professionals yet but will do on 16th September 2013. Can anyone help re diet etc what I should do and what I shouldn't do - sorry for all the questions but just a bit apprehensive and would like to get started with diet etc straight away

Regards

Someone will be with you soon, lots of friendly folks here.

Hi Dolphinufc, welcome to the forum 🙂 How did you come to be diagnosed, and why the delay in putting you on an insulin regime? Were you initially diagnosed as Type 2? Do you know what insulin you will be injecting? Sorry for all the questions!

Hi dolphinUFC welcome to the forum. There are plenty of insulin users on here who can pass on their help and experiences.

Hi Dolphinufc and welcome 🙂

I am guessing you must actually be type 2 and they are moving you onto insulin to help with your blood glucose control. If you were actually type 1 you wouldn't be alive by the 16th of September with no insulin! Have you already been trying to manage your diabetes with diet and/or tablets? The key thing is your carbohydrate intake - all carbs end up as glucose in the bloodstream (pasta, rice, potatoes, bread, cereals, cakes, biscuits, fruits, fruit juices). You need to limit these foods and try to eat consistent amounts of them each day (not big variations), and fill your plate with protein (lean meat, chicken, fish, eggs) and salads and veg. When you start on insulin there is a risk of low blood glucose (hypos), for which you would need to eat a small amount of something sugary, e.g. a few jelly babies, to quickly raise your BG levels to normal again.

Try not to worry, you'll get the hang of it, and lots of advice on here. Make sure you get a glucose meter and testing strips if you haven't already.

Hi

I was originally Type 2 and will be going onto Humulin Insulin as of 16th September 2013. Just got a few worries and was mainly worried about the risks of now perhaps having hypos and what to do in these cases and also to make others aware of what they might need to do to help me in this situation.

Many thanks for your replies.

I am sure I will get there but any information and guidance would be very much appreciated.

Hi Jan have you actually been told you are t1 as it seams odd not to put you on insulin straight away?

... cos just being on insulin, doesn't actually change your diagnosis. If you have been correctly diagnosed Type 2, then you will remain a Type 2 !

Loads of properly diagnosed T2s are on insulin.

And I'm a bit gobsmacked that your doctor would TELL you that you are going on insulin. They are supposed to discuss medications with us, and we reach a joint decision. They don't just drop it on us out of the blue (unless you are T1 and it's then really very much a case of take this or die, as has been mentioned already! LOL) But then this wasn't a doctor because you haven't seen a health professional about it yet.

I'm totally confused ....
