Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Does any members on here suffer from diabetic neuropathy and associated aches and pains?
I ask as I have been a type one diabetic for two years now. I try and keep a very tight reign on my glucose levels and haven't had a hypo....yet! But most days I still moan and groan about feeling like c**p.
Would just like to know other sufferers conditions and health thoughts.
Thank you
Rod

Hi Rod, welcome to the forum 🙂 What levels are you blood sugars generally like? Neuropathy can be 'transient', particularly if you haven't been diagnosed long and especially as a Type 1. Neuropathy would normally develop very slowly and Type 2s are more likey to go years prior to diagnosis so have more chance of developing it. However, the transient type can occur when your blood sugar levels are rapidly improving after a period of higher levels - usually when your levels are more settled then the neuropathy disappears. Have you discussed it with your GP or nurse?

Hi Northerner,
Thank you for your message. I have been type 1 since Jan 2012 and was classed as having slow onset diabetes after being diagnosed with type 2 in 2010.
I have been keeping my sugars in really good check with my last results being 59 HBA1C and they were really happy with me.....BUT i always seem to be having sharp pains, dead hands when waking, slight blurred vision, headaches etc so so so much more often. I just feel each day is a knock back when I am trying so hard to get things right on the dietary front so welcomed feedback from what others experienced.
I have a meeting on the 2nd Feb with the top consultant in the area so have lots of burning questions !

Welcome to the forum, rodnewman.

Good to hear you're seeing a consultant soon. Hopefully they'll look at your "big picture" not just HbA1c in blood results, plus other factors, such as blood pressure, diet, activity levels etc. It's possible that there was some damage to your nerves before you were diagnosed correctly and started on the right treatment for you [insulin]. Perhaps your blood sugars weren't kept in such good control earlier, especially if you weren't supplied with strips to test your own blood glucose levels when misdiagnosed type 2? If that's the case, then a return to good blood glucose levels might mean the end of neuropathy symptoms, as Northerner has said.

Another possibility worth asking consultant about, is if you're taking statins to control cholesterol, some can cause muscle aches & pains.

Hi Copepod,
Thank you for your reply.
Yes I was miss diagnosed at early stages and only got really taken seriously after about 3 months of very poor health and associated illness. My diet, blood pressure and fitness is good, i gain all my sugars from carbs and carb count for insulin and average 5.8 over the last 12 months. I do take statins which started when the type 2 was diagnosed and my cholesterol is way below average anyway so that is another question to be posed. Thank you again
