Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hello all, I was diagnosed with diabetes type two about two years ago.
At the same time I started slimming world, and managed to loose four stone, over 18 months, then I had a personal crisis, and ended up eating all the wrong things and gained the weight and probably more. Im supposed to be on diet control treatment, is it possible to see the diabetic nurse at my GP practise, or are all consultations distanced now because of covid-19?
Does anyone know if there will be any diabetic eye screening this year?
Many thanks all.

You will need to check with your surgery, as differnt surgeries are doing differnt things. I had a letter in March for my screening appointment the beginning of April, I doubted it would go ahead. I then got a letter at lockdown cancelling, and advice if problems with vision to contact hospital eye service. The letter also said they will update the website when service resumes. I have just checked the website, they are currently only dealing with high risk people and those on more than annual checks. I suggest you look at your local screening programme website.

Welcome to the forum @egghead12

Well done on the brilliant weight loss, but sorry you experienced something that meant you put the weight back on. Be encouraged though, that you have succeeded before, and will do again. But I think it is important to find a more permanent ‘way of eating’ rather than a series of restricted but unsustainable diets.

I think various services and regular appointments are beginning to be reorganised as the lockdown begins to lift. Ive not heard anything about our local eye screening service (mine was done in January).

Do you have any particular questions or concerns at the moment? Members here may be able to offer advice and support? It would be good to try to contact your surgery if you needed any of your regular annual blood tests though. Perhaps try for a phoning to ask the receptionists what the current situation is at your surgery?

Hi egghead12, Was it the diabetic nurse who suggested Slimming World?
We usually find that the dietary advice is terrible (even harmful) from the GP Practice , DN, government guidelines, media, slimming clubs etc. Losing weight is no help if you still have high Blood Glucose.

Although there have been some who say that they control their T2 using SW or WW, the vast majority of those who are successful in controlling T2D (putting it into remission) use some form of 'Low Carb' eating rather than calorie restriction, since having T2D means that we can't tolerate as much, if any, carbohydrates (sugars and starches) in our meals.
When I went Low Carb I lost 23lbs without cutting calories and without additional exercise and put my HbA1C back into the pre-diabetic levels.
