Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi, I'm Debs. I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes a number of years ago. Had to go on to insulin about 3 months ago, and have, unfortunately, gained quite a bit of weight (after struggling to lose it in the first place) It's really getting me down tbh ☹️ In addition to diabetes I've got several other health problems including fibromyalgia, which seems to effect my sugar levels. Feel like I'm caught up in a vicious cycle at the moment Anyway.....just wanted to introduce myself, and say hello

Hi Debs and welcome.

Sorry to hear you are struggling with various health issues and now weight gain.
Which insulin(s) have you been given and what sort of doses are you taking?
Have you learned to carb count and adjust your doses or are you on fixed doses which are set by your nurse?
Have you made any changes to your diet over the years and if so what changes have you made?
Unfortunately the NHS dietary advice is not always helpful for Type 2 diabetes and is a bit behind the curve with modern thinking.
Presumably, you have a BG meter now that you are on insulin... What sort of readings are you getting and when do you take them?

The more information you can give us the better understanding we have of your situation and therefore the more appropriate we can make our suggestions and guidance.

Insulin itself does not cause weight gain, it is the food that you eat which does that. The insulin just allows your body to access that food a bit better, so the key in many respects is still diet and whatever exercise you can do although I appreciate the Fibromyalgia will limit you. Are you able to walk at all as walking is great exercise for diabetes.
Do you take any medication for the Fibromyalgia? Just wondering if steroids are involved as they are notorious for raising BG levels.

Anyway, I am so pleased that you have found the forum as it is a gold mine of lived experience with diabetes and we all understand how challenging and frustrating living with it can be but there are lots of tips and tricks and motivational success stories here to help you find a way forward with your diabetes.

Please ask if you have any questions but the more info you can give us about BG levels and the medication you take, the better we can help you. Diabetes is quite individual and medications work in different ways so what might be appropriate advice for one person could be quite risky for someone else without knowing the full circumstances, even just with dietary changes.

Look forward to hearing more from you and hopefully helping you manage your diabetes better. It isn't an easy journey but it is so much less difficult to travel it with other people and learn from each other, even if it is just virtually!

Welcome to the forum @Debs04

Sorry to hear that your weight has gone up recently - especially after your hard work to reduce it!

Which insulin(s) have you been offered (including any letters and numbers in the name)? How many injections a day? People are started on a variety of systems, and some are more flexible and easier to tweak than others.

Hopefully you will be able to find a happy balance between a menu that suits you for weight loss, and the insulin you need to balance it. 🙂

Welcome to the forum @Debs04 I am glad that you have found us.

Sorry to hear that you have found things more difficult since you have started taking insulin.
It will help us with our responses if we know which insulin(s) you are using. There are a variety of options available to people and tweaks can help with giving more flexibility with what you chose to eat.
Are you on other meds. If you are happy to let us know more info we can give more informed answers.
