Welcome to the forum
You should have been given your HbA1C result than has led to your diagnosis and depending on what that is will indicate how far into the diabetes zone you are. The threshold is anything over 47mmol/mol so if you are not too far above that then hopefully you will be able to make some dietary changes that will be sufficient and your GP will give you that opportunity before prescribing medication. Those changes would be needed anyway.
It is all about your intake of carbohydrates which will need to be reduced, that is not just sugar but all carbohydrates convert to glucose.
This link might help you with some ideas but also prepare you with what questions to ask at your appointment.
https://lowcarbfreshwell.com/ This will give you a good guide on what you can and shouldn't eat or only have in small portions or as a treat rather than everyday.
Many find a low carb approach successful but there are other regimes which people try and there are some menu suggestions on the main DUK site.

There is a bit to learn and it takes time, I'm not suggesting your panicking but don't panic as they say, take some time to digest read around the forum and have a look at the guides on here, and wait to see the doctor for more information. By then you will no doubt have some questions for him/her, its helpful to write them down as a memory jogger. You may be asked to submit another blood sample for testing as its usual not to diagnose on one test alone. Depending on the result of your HbA1c test and how high above normal it is will determine the doctors suggested response as to the way forward. Most doctors will agree for you to cary out life style changes to see how you get on if your not way above normal and dependent on your symptoms also. If it helps you feel you are addressing the situation straight away it may be useful to start on some small diet changes and start cutting down on high carb foods plus maybe some light additional exercise, a walk after a meal for example. Hope this is not sounding patronising and best of luck with your upcoming medical visit.

Sometimes people worry about a spoonful of sauce or pickle or in your case gravy but it is more what you are putting it on which is more likely to be the problem.
Keto Kitchen, The Caldesi books, Pinch of Nom all have good recipes but check out the food and recipes section of the forum or in the link I posted or on the website sugarfreelondoner for both sweet and savoury low carb recipes.

Welcome to the forum @hayle

Well done on the changes you have been making so far. 🙂

There are a variety of different meal plans on the main Diabetes UK website which may give you some ideas:

And this downloadable e-book ‘Enjoy Food’ has some helpful general advice.

Good luck! And let us know how you get on 🙂

Hi Hayle, leadinglights is spot on there, I also like gravy, although I just use the cheats way, Bisto, I find it has no detrimental effect at all when I have a roast, yes the carbs of a chicken version are 61 per 100g but the whole container weighs 190g. So when I make it for me and my daughter using 4 heaped teaspoons per half pint or so the overall effect of 1/4 pint is tiny. So some foods look scary when you look at the carbs per 100g, marmalade for instance but when you consider you only use a fraction per serving its not so bad, all about doing the rough maths in your head!
