Hi all, new user from West Sussex, type 2 diabetic. Keen to try low carb diet and exercise to combat my weight/blood sugar levels. Lost 1.5 stone since January largely by giving up alcohol and bread. But need to shift another stone at least, any tips? Cheers

Welcome @Typedeux ...... You have come to the right place for help

My strategy is to cut/reduce all major carb sources like bread, rice, pasta, cereals, starchy vegetables (e.g. potatoes); instead replacing them with green leafy vegetables grown above ground.

For example, my dinner last night was:
  • Stir fried flank steak & broccoli
  • Served on a bed of Spinach

Hi Typedeux, welcome to the forum 🙂 I'd suggest starting a food diary, writing down the amount of carbs, in grams, in everything you eat and drink each day. Using this you can then look for areas where you might reduce or replace the carbs with alternatives. Make sure that any changes you make are sustainable 🙂 As for exercise, what sort of things do you enjoy? The best approach is to find something, again, that is sustainable - maybe set yourself a realistic goal and work towards it, then build towards an improved goal. 🙂

hi and welcome. I'm very similar but so far have only lost 3kg. Using 5/2 diet a la Dr Michael Mosley. Suits me. Anything rather than Metformin. Vomiting and diarrhoea is just not my style!
Keep it up.

Hi and welcome @Typedeux and congratulations on your weight loss - that's pretty good going in a short time ! As Martin has said above, cutting major carb sources will make a big difference and you should also avoid the high carb fruits too and go for the low carb ones such as raspberries and strawberries and avoid the dreaded banana!
If you can get a meter you can then test before and after meals to gain an idea of what foods put your glucose level up and are best avoided and after a couple of months you'll have a pretty good idea of what you can eat and then can test much less frequently.
Personally I've never gone to the lengths of weighing what I eat (I'm probably too lazy!) but with what I've learned about carbs in foods and their effect on me I've got a pretty good grip on my diet and good control of my blood glucose.
There are many sources of info about carb levels in foods and one that many diabetics use is "Carbs and Cals" it is also available as an app for phones. A good book is "Reverse Your Diabetes by Dr David Cavan" it is an easily read source of info about diabetes and diet and I found it invaluable when I was first diagnosed.

Thanks for all your replies, all very useful information that I will go through in detail. I will certainly take Martin’s advice and target other carb sources, I have also cut back on potatoes drastically as part of my earlier diet.

I will also keep a food diary as I am sure that will prove useful, especially in tandem with the blood sugar monitor I was given by the diabetes nurse at my local surgery.

In terms of exercise, I walk daily with my wife but I am hoping to take up some more serious hiking very soon.

So far so good, feeling confident that I will get the better of this. When diagnosed back in January I was prescribed 80mg of Gliclazide, was reduced to 40mg at my last appointment and hope to reduce further by June.

Thanks again everyone.

Welcome ! A very good friend of mine is now off his T2 meds & that's because he changed his Diet. Really good luck 🙂

Lamb chops for breakfast seems to be a good idea - according to my waistline at least.
I am down 40 lb now, it was more but I have been doing some resistance training. Amazing how light everything feels now.
Use carbs to control your blood glucose levels, get them down to normal and the weight just goes.
It might mean your clothes sliding south without warning, so watch out.
I really need to add a cushion to this chair too - I can feel my bones all too well.

Welcome to the forum Typedeux from a fellow T2

Hi and welcome to the forum.

Lamb chops for breakfast, oh my days that sounds heavenly! Thank you again everyone for the warm welcome.

Welcome to the Forum. This is a great help and you will have lots of advice and help. If you like cooking Michael Moseley's books are useful. "8 week blood sugar diet", "blood sugar diet recipes"; also "Clever Guts Diet." Davina McCall has a good book "Davina's Sugar Free" but I don't do the potato, rice or pasta bits. She states the sat fat, carb, salt etc content in all the recipes at the back. Tom Kerridge's Dopamine Diet book is good too. Someone has already mentioned David Cavan's.

I have odd breakfasts when in work. I never wake hungry but once I am in work at about 9am I crave toast which I try to avoid. I keep food in fridge in work and last week my gorgeous breakfast was stuffed olives and houmous or a chunk of smoked cheese!!! Houmous isn't very low carb due to chick peas but I tolerate it quite well and often add a bit of olive oil to it!!

I hope you cut the fat off the chops first!!

No need to do that ! As Ditto says, best bit - but fat is not the evil we have been brainwashed to believe for many years.

No - I cook the chops in my heavy frying pan, so I am not adding any fat, but I eat them as they come - I get the butcher around the corner from us to order up a bit lamb - officially it is a hogget, which was frisking about on the good Dorset grass until it's time came. It is not as fatty as a younger animal, but I have strong doubts about the so called research on eating fats. A lot of other people are coming around to the same way of thinking as the changes made in diet should not have resulted in more illness and weight gain throughout the population. People have been eating low fat and trying to exercise their way out of a high carb diet for decades now and it is just not working.
