Relationship to Diabetes
Gestational
Hi All. I had gestational diabetes 13 years ago and about 2 years ago was told I was borderline diabetic. I was prescribed 500mg Metformin once a day, which I find weird not being fully diabetic. I am currently feeling fatigued, unwell, nausea, excess thirst etc. I also had problems with my sight not sure if related, but blurry vision, difficulty focusing sometimes. My family all has T2 diabetes (both parents and all siblings) so I guess there is a genetic aspect, but I am also obese (BMI 38). I am awaiting the latest test to see if still borderline or T2 myself, but feel like either way I need to be taking control of myself, my eating habits and my weight. I do worry that because I am already taking Metformin that this could affect the result of the blood tests and I may actually be diabetic, but not diagnosed. It's not that I want to be diabetic, but I want to know where I stand so I can deal with it and move forward.
Sorry that was a bit of a long 'hello'.

Welcome.
I did read somtimve ago that treating PreDiabetes with Metformin was being suggested by some researchers. Your other symptoms do suggest high blood sugar's.

Hi and welcome to the forum.

Welcome to the forum, congratulations on making a decision to take control of your life

The sad thing is that as you are boarderline/pre-D/D (pick one) it is better to treat yourself as being diabetic. Many of us who have achieved good control also find side affects like being a lot healthier than we were pre DX.

Hi Rudypoo
Warm welcome to the forum

Hello Rudypoo 🙂 welcome to the forum...that blurry vision is horrible, I've had that.

Thanks for the welcome everyone. I've been reading about the benefits of the low carb diet and also the low carb high fat. I'm really keen to make this change for myself and my family, my husband is also diabetic, so my son has it coming at him from both sides of the family. My trouble is I can do the research and planning, it's the putting it into practice every day that's hard. I know I'm not the first to feel that way though. Good to know there are other people out there to help and support. I think whether the latest test is diabetic or still borderline now is the time to change. Put my determined face on now 😱

One of the ways I descended into the heresy of LCHF in by cutting all Bread, Rice, Pasta, Cereals & starchy vegetables... Replacing them with green leafy vegetables instead.

Don't be put off by the High Fat part of LCHF, I don't really have much more fat in my diet than before. It refers to the percentage of energy from fats vs carbs (and you have just significantly reduced your carb intake). One thing to note that the quality of the fats are important, no more vegetable, corn, soy or any other manufactured oil.

My meals are actually better in my Way of Eating as veggies make up the bulk of the meal.

Hello and welcome from a T2. I've been told metformin is standard, even for pre diabetics. Their just prescribed it. As for HbA1c, don't know.
What does your optician say? Mention diabetes and yearly testing to them.
