Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi there, I was diagnosed Type 2 about 7 years ago, my husband has been type one for about 36 years, since his 20's

My diagnosis was almost accidental. I was given a raft of blood tests for something else entirely and the diabetes one came back positive

However my three month tests have always been fine, right from the start so it has made little or no change to my life apart from taking the tablets!!

I put this down to the fact that since my husband became diabetic I have always eaten his diet and have never liked sweet things or chocolate much.

So there I was on a healthy low fat low carb diet and it seemed to control my diabetes without any effort - even before I knew I had it!!

My husband is one of those unfortunate people who cannot take synthetic insulin, he has tried several, and to day remains on a pork insulin which he tolerates far better.

Glad to be able to join you all!!

Hi SusieQ, welcome to the forum 🙂 Excellent to hear that you are managing the diabetes well - as you say, it must be a big help that you are used to eating a healthy, diabetes-friendly diet because of your husband's Type 1 (he's welcome to join too!). We have a number of members on animal insulin, so he's not alone.

If there's anything we can help you with, please ask, or you can have a good old rant or moan if you wish - we don't mind! 🙂 Look forward to hearing more from you 🙂

Hi SusieQ. Welcome 🙂

And to your husband, if he wants to join in the fun ! :D

🙂Hello and welcome to the forum

hi Susie and welcome to the forum 🙂

Hi SusieQ,

As a fellow "newbie" I'd like to welcome you to this site🙂

Q - do you ever get accused of not being a "real" diabetic (ie. Type I)?
I am guilty of levelling that at others I know but, in my defence, it's meant very much tongue-in-cheek. Strikes me that you Type 2's (sorry for the pigeon-hole) can have a harder time, since your Islets/hormones are still undecided.
