And newly diagnosed.

Initially thought I was T2 but just found out I have strong autoimmune indicators. Still processing this information which was relayed to me by accident! Not spoken to a nurse or doctor yet, so naturally a bit terrified.

Anyway what will be will be. I’ve joined to get help and hopefully in time, to help others.

Welcome to the forum. You have come to the right place to get help. There is plenty of experience to tap into on here, so fire away with any questions that arise.

It is a lot to take on board at the start, but it gets easier. If you are happy to tell us a bit about how you are managing your diabetes it helps us when answering your questions.
Have you been given a sensor (Libre)?
What insulin ps are you using?

I look forward to hearing more from you.

Welcome @FlibbityGibbet 🙂 Was the comment about strong autoimmune indicators an opinion or have you had the tests to determine your diabetes type? If you are Type 1, there are a lot of Type 1s here who were diagnosed at a similar age to you, so you’re not alone.

Are you on any medication for the diabetes? What prompted your diagnosis - ie was it found randomly or did you have symptoms? How’s your blood sugar at the moment?

Welcome to the forum @FlibbityGibbet

Sorry to hear about your diagnosis. We have quite a few on the forum who were diagnosed with T1 in later life (around half of new cases of T1 occur in adulthood) - and it’s not all that unusual to have been mis-classified as T2 originally.

When are you next due a follow-up appointment? And have you been offered insulin yet?

Hi and welcome from me too.

I was also a late starter with Type 1 at the age of 55 and I am coming up to 6years down the line with it. It is pretty overwhelming at first but gradually you get your head around the basics and it starts to just become part of your everyday life and you learn to do quite a bit of it on autopilot.

How long ago were you diagnosed with diabetes and how did that come about?
Have you had the C-peptide and antibody blood tests? Or is it that you have other autoimmune conditions in your family which gives you "strong autoimmune indicators"? That seems a slightly odd expression. It is more commonly expressed as a (strong) positive (or negative) autoimmune test result, which is why we are a bit confused by it.

Have they started you on insulin yet?

Thank you all for the welcome - feeling better today after clinic. Background for me…

Started to sense something was up about May 24, black mould in the toilet.

By Sept 24 I was up through the night and thirsty a lot. I rapidly dropped 25kg so made an appointment. Mid Nov was the first time I could get an appointment.

Finger prick was 19.9 and ketones in my urine. I was put on glic and met straight away. Due to the ketones I was tested for antibodies. Everyone was convinced I was T2 and I got a surprise this week - all 3 antibodies came in very high >1400 across them all. I requested a c-peptide which was done today.

Between appointments I’ve bought Libre 2+.joined a nutrition programme and nearly halved my HbA1c in 7 weeks.

I was feeling positive about a path to remission when I thought it was T2. So the antibody test result knocked me for 6.

I agreed with the dr I can delay insulin until I have a c-peptide result and if my bg rise. My Libre is trending around 7-8 and due to low carb I’m not spiking. I’m on max Metformin at the moment. So all in all it’s been 7 weeks and a day since they switched me from T2 to T1 for the record.

In reality I’ll be both as overweight and suffering (career) burnout so not moving. Food is under control need to up exercise.
