Hi JonnyD, welcome to the forum
🙂 Sorry to hear about your diagnosis, but hopefully once you get to grips with things you will find it manageable - many people find that they actually end up feeling fitter and healthier than they have for some time as a consequence of the adjustments they make to their diet and activity levels, so the future can be brighter than you might think
🙂
Are you on any medication for your diabetes? I would suggest looking in our
'Useful Links' thread for some good sources of information. Particularly recommended are
Jennifer's Advice and
Maggie Davey's letter, and the excellent book
Type 2 Diabetes: The First Year by Gretchen Becker.
Have you been given a meter so you can monitor the effects of different food on your blood sugar levels? The majority of people find this is the best, if not the only, way of tailoring their diet to their own tolerances, in order to maintain good blood sugar levels. Many foods may be thought of as 'healthy', but if they raise your levels unduly, then they cannot be considered healthy for you - fruit juice is a good example. With a meter, you can discover what things you tolerate well and what you may need to cut out of your diet or reduce in quantity. Unfortunately, many GPs are reluctant to prescribe the necessary test strips, largely due to cost, so if you haven't got a meter, you may need to persuade them of how you will use it to learn and understand your diabetes to maintain good levels. Have a read of
Test,Review, Adjust by Alan S to get an idea of why it is important.
Right, that's enough information to keep you going for a while! Please feel free to ask any questions you may have, and we will do our best to help!
