Relationship to Diabetes

I have just been diagnosed with T2 and feel really overwhelmed at the amount of information I’m trying to take in.
my GP has referred me to a diabetic nurse, but no idea how long that will take. My mmol is 72.
lm So confused about what foods are a no go, except that I should be cutting out sugar and having minimal carbs. I’ve ordered a couple of books to help me understand the lifestyle change more. My GP has recommended I read Dr Mike Mosley’s books. I probably have about 30lbs to lose for an ideal weight.
can anyone recommend any online GI diet info please? I’m also pretty inactive and am going to make an effort to move more, although going for walks is Not something that motivates me. I thought I could look at YouTube for some gentle exercise videos?
any advice or recommendations you could give me would be greatly appreciated.
 
Welcome to the forum. I expect that when you see your diabetic nurse they may suggest some medication as your Hba1C of 72mmol/mol is quite high but there is still plenty you can do with some dietary changes. It is certainly a good idea to cut out sugar and those food with a lot of added sugar like cakes, biscuits and sugary drinks including fruit juice but also reducing carbohydrates in your diet but that certainly does not mean NO carbs. The suggested amount of carbs is no more than 130g total carbs per day. The idea of low GI does not really help that much and you are better looking at low carb plans.
This link may help you with some ideas for modifying your diet, it also has a good explanation of the principals of managing diabetes.
If you have previously had a high carb diet then reducing your carbs gradually is kinder on your eyes and nerves as it allows the body adjust to lower glucose levels.

If you can increase exercise then it all helps, for people with reduced mobility there are some seated exercises that the NHS have if you google it.
But brisk walking is a good exercise even 15mins will all help.
 
If you need to do some exercise you can do this at home reasonably easily by getting the vacuum cleaner out and doing one room at a time, moving the furniture in it out from the walls and back again after you clean behind it. How often do you dust the tops of the doors and their doorframes, ditto the curtain rails and cleaning the windows and the window ledges, plus your skirting boards. If the house is pristine you're welcome to come and do mine!

There aren't any specific exercises that are specific 5to diabetes, it's more about finding what works for your body that you can do consistently. Youtube is a great source for exercise ideas, anything from Yoga to dancing wil help.
