hi I will try and keep this short and sweet (pardon the pun) 18 months ago I went to dr because I was losing weight without trying to, no other symptoms at all . Had a blood test and dr phoned to say I had diabetes which was an absolute shock because I was not overweight , have no family history and exercise regularly . I was put on glyclozide to begin with but was having readings of over 20 . Now on 2000 mg of Metformin and 10 mg of Jardinance. I have lost over a stone and a half, blood pressure and chloresterol are all good but my levels are still in late teens . I did some research and thought I might have been misdiagnosed and may be type 1. When I suggested this to my diabetic nurse she said “well it doesn’t matter really what one you are, you will be injecting by December if we don’t get your levels down’ this made me burst into tears in the surgery and didn’t find it helpful at all . I ate healthily anyway but have totally cut carbs out where possible. I had blueberries and raspberries with Greek yoghurt and a spoonful of low sugar granola this morning for breakfast but my reading went from 10 to 17 . I’m not sure what more I can do ? Any help would be gratefully received. I did some research about C-peptide blood test which my dr has helpfully carried out for me to see if I’m type 1. Sorry this was longer than meant to be .

Hello, Ella, and welcome to the forum. I’m glad your GP is receptive to the fact that you may be type 1, I was 51 at diagnosis, and it took me a year to get properly diagnosed and onto insulin, and finally get my levels down. I’d gone through the Type 2 drugs/low carb route, and nothing was working.
I do wish nurses wouldn’t sound as if starting insulin was a punishment for not trying hard enough! If your pancreas has packed up, there’s nothing you can do about it!
Do shout if there’s anything specific you want to ask, or just to have a rant, there’s a wealth of experience on here and we love sharing it.

Hello @Ella70 . Welcome to the forum. You will get lots of helpful info and cyber support here. It is good to hear your gp has done the C-peptide test so it sounds like your Dr is on the ball.

It also Sounds like that nurse was somehat insensitive.
Firstly I wish to reassure you that whatever type you turn out to have, diabetes is a manageable condition . Once you’ve got it under control, it’s more like an irritating friend.
Please don’t fear insulin or the injections , it is really good stuff, I’ve been on it for a couple of years now and think it is the best thing since sliced bread.

If you are a type two who can lower levels by eating a low carb diet, then excluding grains and fruits from your diet should have some effect in a few days - I find that I can eat some carbs, though better later in the day - breakfast would be meat or eggs, or even fish,
Perhaps you could try the fruit and granola later in the day - maybe weigh out and calculate just how many carbs you ate to see such a large rise, and have that again in the evening to see if you are less insulin resistant in the evening.
There is always the possibility that you need insulin injections, so starting to calculate your net carb intake would be a good idea. Diabetes is not about sugar in the diet, but carbohydrates, minus the fibre for most people.
