Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi, my name’s Cathy and I have Diabetes 2.
I’ve joined this site to learn more about new meds and diet and of course talk to other like minded people. Wow!! I sound like I’m on a quiz show

Welcome @Cathy Finlayson. :D How did you find us? How long since your diagnosis?

Hi Cathy Finlayson, welcome to the forum.

Ha! Yes intro's always remind me of the Wheel of Fortune 🙂. Glad to have you here, we've got a wealth of info on the main site and personal experience on the forum.

Feel free to share a bit more about you and let us know if you have any questions or concerns.

Hi Cathy and welcome from me too.

What have you tried so far in terms of dietary changes and medication?
Do you know your most recent HbA1c result as that helps to indicate where you are on the diabetes scale?
Do you have much/any weight to lose?
How active are you?

These things all impact on the suggestions we can make to try to help you.

Hi I was diagnosed in 2011 but controlled by diet only then as time went on was put on metformin, alogliptin and Glicazide. HbA1c 68 and got it down to 53 now. Morbidly obese and have recently lost 1/2 stone. So moving in the right direction. Dr would like me to go on injection weekly.

Thanks for that extra info.
Well done on your recent weight loss and reduction in HbA1c. That is good progress.

Will this new medication be an addition to the others or will some of them be cut back or stopped do you know? It seems a bit odd to add more medication when you are making progress and your HbA1c isn't too high?

I know that NHS dietary advice for Type 2 in the past hasn't been all that helpful and unfortunately many find that it is still not ideal, so I wonder if reviewing your diet with a view to reducing your carb intake might help rather than taking more medication. There is also the option I believe of being referred onto a very low calorie shakes type diet to trigger rapid weight loss which has been shown to be beneficial in reversing Type 2 in a good percentage of patients studied. The fact that you have been diabetic for quite a while should not restrict you in thinking that you may still be able to reverse this with the right strategy and a will to do it. There are many members here who have lost a lot of weight through changing their diet and come off medication and have got their HbA1c back into the normal range again.

For many of the type twos I have come across, going back to the old way of controlling it has worked wonders.
Reducing carbohydrates and concentrating on lower starch and sugar plants - eating a wide variety of them which apparently improves the gut biome (A life scientific, 19/10/21 BBC Radio 4) - and also checking how meals affect you as an individual ticks all the boxes.

Why does your GP feel you need injections when your showing improvement with weight loss?

I managed to shift my T2 into the non diabetic region thru exercise and diet - can’t advocate this enough. My body seems to react well now to carbs, even when I do slip and eat to many its seems to deal with it.
