Hi, as some of you may have guessed by the title, I am of a certain age (I usually win the Baby Boomer edition of Trivial Pursuit!).
Recently retired during the summer & old enough to remember rationing (hence the title).
I was diagnosed with type 2 just over 2 years ago. Still confused by a lot of things but I think I'm on the right track - it's a shame there is naff info from members of the NHS although not necessarily my medicos on the diabetes team - it's the others - & I live in an area I regard as good from that side of things.
When diagnosed I weighed 96 kilo. I'm now at 78 & aiming for 72 kilo which should be close to an ideal weight.
Key things - I've taken up cycling again which I used to do when a youth & I walk at least 30 mins every day even with snow on the ground under the Walk4Health http://www.wfh.naturalengland.org.uk/ initiative. I eat less & if I snack it's with fruit or nuts not crisps or biscuits.
medication is Metformin twice a day, plus as a side issue I take atenolol for blood pressure (which is now fairly low due to the exercise), simvastatin 'cos that's part of the risk reduction decreed by NICE & Allopurinol for gout - which since my improved diet I've not been troubled with.
If you're despondent about weight loss take a look at this site the guys an inspiration http://theamazing39stonecyclist.wordpress.com/
Overall I feel very healthy & climbed Vesuvius (yes the volcano) in October, leaving a couple of Aussies 20 years my junior for dead! Did I feel good after that!
Confused? Do sensible things, exercise as much as you can & you'll be surprised at how quickly you feel so much better. Set yourself small goals then when you've met them, set some more a tad higher.
Good Luck!
