Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hello all.

This is my first post ever on a forum.

I've just been diagnosed with type 2 ( I think). It all started after a blood test at Rheumatology Clinic on Thursday showed a high blood glucose level of 35 mmol/L. I have Fibromyalgia, ME and suffer from chronic back pain and have been getting worse for a couple of years but very drastically over the last 6 months. My symptoms are severe exhaustion, muscle and joint pain, fluctuations in my vision, dizziness and vertigo, weakness, difficulty with concentration and an extremely dry mouth with difficulty in swallowing. I also have become noise sensitive. All these symptoms could be explained by the Fibromyalgia/ME and the dry mouth by a medication side effect so I didn't even think of diabetes.

I have suffered with seborrheic dermatitis for years but this has also got worse over the last 9 months and also spread from my scalp to my face (especially my eyebrows), chest, arms and groin. My hair has also been falling out badly.

Anyway, a hospital doctor called a few hours after the test and asked me to come into hospital the next day so they could investigate further. I did go in and was told I probably have type 2 but they needed to check my kidney and liver functions. They were going to refer me to the dietitian. I also was tested for ketones and my reading was 1.4. I had fasted but they didn't want to check blood sugar levels so I ate a chicken wholemeal sandwich. Fifteen minutes later they then decided they did want to check my blood sugar levels and I had a reading of 16.something mmol/L.

I was sat waiting for hours and my back was in agony. I needed to lie down with a couple of hot water bottles slapped on my back. So my husband chased them up and then I was told to take 500 Mg of Metformin twice a day for 1 week and then see doctor so they could prescribe 1000mg twice a day after that. I wasn't thinking straight because of the pain so didn't question if it was type 2 or if my kidneys and liver were ok. I came away with no information about diabetes or if I had to test my blood sugar levels. I will be speaking to my doctor on Monday but would love to hear any thoughts or advice.

I am now left wondering how much my symptoms were caused by undiagnosed diabetes or the Fibromyalgia/ME.

Hey Jillian
You have had to deal with a lot and it sure can feel overwhelming eh ! Write down any questions you have and when you see the doctor ask and make sure you ask until you feel like you have the info you need. I’m sure you know the drill with doctors ! Some of course are awesome so I hope you have one of those. You’re not alone - eberyone on here is fab. Let us know how you get on. Good luck !
