Hi, and welcome. Fully understand how you're feeling - we've all been there and got the T-shirt - but it does pass, and by joining us you'll be able to get all the help and support you need.

Sorry to hear about your diagnosis. It’s very common to feel overwhelmed at the stage you are at. It can be a little like a process of grieving, with a jumble of very intense emotional reactions and states of mind - so be kind to yourself, and allow yourself time to adjust and start the gradual process of moving towards some kind of acceptance.

There are a lot of genetic components in many diabetes diagnoses, and it is not always something that can be dodged.

Do you know what your HbA1c was and over what sort of period it has been rising?

You may need to slightly adjust your thinking around a healthy diet now that your metabolism has begun to struggle with normal/western amounts of carbohydrates. A slight re-adjustng of proportions of macronutrients could be beneficial. It is the total carbohydrate values that will best predict glucose outcomes of meals, so keep an eye on those rather than the traffic-light fixation with ‘sugars’.

Many people feel they have a healthy diet but sadly it might not be so if for people with Type 2 diabetes as it is too high in carbohydrates.
The Freshwell approach was developed by a GP practice to help their Type 2 patients as they recognised that the standard NHS EatWell Plate was too high in carbs for many to tolerate. This link may help you find a way of modifying your diet. https://lowcarbfreshwell.com/

Metformin will help but dietary changes will be equally if not more important especially with such a modest dose. It is usual anyway to start with a low dose to allow the body to adjust.
