Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Heya I'm 25 and I've recently been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, they have also found keytones in my system, I suffer from anxiety and I've been out on glucophage, in all fairness I'm just looking for some support and a little guidance to help me?

Hi Kieron and welcome.

You have come to the right place for help and support so try to relax a bit. Have a read around the threads on the forum and ask anything you get stuck with.

If you can tell us a bit more about how you came to be diagnosed.. ie were you symptomatic and if so what sort of symptoms? Also, if you know it, your HbA1c result... this is the blood test result that they use to diagnose diabetes and will be a number of 48 or more but can be as high as 3 figures.

You are quite young to have Type 2 diabetes. Is there any family history of it? Do you have much/any weight to lose or have you lost weight suddenly without trying too hard?

The Glucophage is just a brand name for Metformin which is usually the first medication they try. It has a bit of a reputation for digestive upset so best to take it mid meal or just after a substantial amount of food to minimize the risk of upsetting your stomach. Hopefully they have started you off on a low dose and will build it up slowly.

If you can let us know a bit more info as I have queried above it will help us to give you appropriate advice. Diabetes is usually a slow moving condition so you should have time to get your head around things.

Have they given you a means of testing for ketones ... maybe some strips to dip in your urine and perhaps some means of testing your blood glucose levels?.... a finger pricker and BG meter maybe?

Welcome @Kieron96 🙂 As said above, you’re young to have Type 2. It’s also not usual to have ketones with Type 2, but it is with Type 1.

Can you write a little more about how you were diagnosed? And, if you’re happy to say, what’s your BMI (weight)?

Welcome to the most helpful and diverse club I have ever been part of. It takes a weight off your mind knowing you are not alone and the various people and various diagnosis shared on these pages that will hopefully reassure you and help you get a handle on your personal progress. Good luck.

Hi and welcome. Next time you talk to the GP do ask about having the two tests for T1 just to confirm your current T2 diagnosis is correct. Metformin is a very common, safe diabetes drug which I have even though on insulin. It will help control your blood sugar to some extent. Having a lower-carb diet will also help. There are further tablets that can be added if needed but hopefully you won't need them. BTW if you don't currently have glucose meter do get hold of one. No need to be obsessive about using it but knowing your BS is in a good range can allay fears.

Welcome to the forum @Kieron96

Sorry to hear about your diagnosis. Sometimes a diagnosis with T2 can be made largely on the basis of ‘not being a child’, but 50% of T1s are diagnosed in adulthood (i was diagnosed at 21) amd we have many here who were diagnosed with T1 much later in life than you.

Worth keeping an open mind and asking pointy questions, especially if the medications you are on don’t seem to be helping. And keep an eye in those ketones!

Did you lose weight without meaning to before you went to the Drs?

How are things going @Kieron96 Are you testing your own blood sugar? Is there anything you’re particularly worried about at the moment?
