My daughter was diagnosed in June, she is 7. We've survived the summer holidays in one piece, now hoping that transitioning back to school won't be too bumpy! Any advice/tips? thanks

Just make sure to keep on top of testing and finding the right balance with food and activity as that all plays a part it's no easy ride but it gets easier in time

Hi Katie, welcome to the forum 🙂 How has she been with things? What insulin regime is she on? I can't offer any personal tips or advice as I was diagnosed aged 49, but I imagine one thing that needs to be borne in mind is that her routine will no doubt change significantly from her 'holiday' routine. Hopefully, the teachers are trained and ready to spot any signs that may need their intervention, or will act immediately should she report, for example, feeling hypo.

Have you got a copy of Type 1 Diabetes in Children Adolescents and Young People by Ragnar Hanas? It's considered to be the 'bible' for children and young people on insulin regimes, packed with information on every conceivable aspect of living with Type 1 and written in a very accessible style. Not cheap, but invaluable 🙂

Also, the Diabetes UK section on schools may prove helpful 🙂

You may also like to check out the Children with Diabetes website, which offers lots of information, and help and support from other UK parents via a Facebook group.

Please feel free to ask any and every question you may have and we will do our best to help - there is a huge amount of knowledge and experience here that encompass the whole range of likely situations, so whatever the concern, it's likley to have been encountered by others who have developed a strategy for dealing with it 🙂 I look forward to hearing how things go as she returns to school - hoping everything goes smoothly! 🙂

Hello and welcome to forum

Hello and welcome to the forum hopefully some of the mum's will see you post and be able to help you re school for your daughter.

Welcome to the forum Katie.
Did your daughter go to school after diagnosis and before holidays? Have you and your daughter's diabetes team had any contact with staff at your daughter's school? When is your daughter's first day of term?
Northerner has already linked to Diabetes UK school resources, which are highly recommended.

Hello Katie, welcome to the forum 🙂 glad you survived the holidays!
