Was diagnosed with suspected Type 1 in March. Still lots to get my head around. Glad to meet everyone here 🙂

Hi Nix welcome to the forum, you say suspected so are you still waiting since March to find out?

Hello Nix. Welcome.

Still plenty to learn after decades, so take your time and don't get overwhelmed by it all. Learn the basics, then you can improve slowly.

Rob

Thanks for the warm welcome!

I say suspected because the doctors and nurses haven't come up with anything more specific than that!

I was diagnosed because I was losing weight without trying. My GP referred me to a diabetic nurse and when I saw her she checked my blood glucose and it was 27. I didn't have any ketones so she said I was Type 2 but put me straight on insulin to bring my levels down. Then I saw another nurse who said that I didn't fit the profile for Type 2 so I must be Type 1.

I requested the blood test to find out which type I am and was told I'd get the result in two weeks. That passed and they kept fobbing me off until I found out that actually the doctor who sent me for the test is Spanish and had requested the test (is it GAD antibodies or something?) with a Spanish name. The lab didn't know what she meant and forgot about it.

Then a specialist at the hospital chased the test up for me and it came back negative ie no antibodies therefore Type2. However the next specialist I saw said that the lab probably just used the latest blood sample they had rather than the one taken at diagnosis so actually the result was inconclusive and he suspects I'm actually Type 1.

So there you go! I've resigned myself to not knowing officially and all the doctors and nurses tell me it makes no difference, I need insulin and that's that.

What a nightmare for you!

I suppose if they're in agreement that you need insulin that's something.

Anyhow, welcome 🙂 Feel free to ask questions or rant!

It would be nice to know the Type, but atleast you're receiving treatment.

You must be coming up for another HbA1c test by now? Also, have you had your retinopathy screening yet?

Anyhow, a warm welcome to the forum.

Andy 🙂

Hi Nix, welcome to the forum 🙂 I would have thought they could do a C-peptide test which would confirm whether you were producing your own insulin or not. The GAD antibody would show whether you had an auto immune reaction which is an indicator of Type 1, but C-peptide is produced in equal amounts to your own natural insulin production (injected insulin doesn't contain C-peptide) so it shows how much, if any, you are producing.

Anyway, as long as you are on the appropriate treatment to manage your diabetes, that is the main thing! 🙂 Have a look at the 'Useful Links' thread at the top of this section for books and links that may help, or for anything else - please ask!

Thanks everyone

It's interesting what you say about the C-peptide test Northerner. I hadn't heard of it and I'll certainly check out the thread about it.

I've had my eyes, kidney function and nerves in my feet checked. A little background retinopathy but that might be from bringing down my Hba1c levels down quickly when I was first diagnosed.

I'm the kinda person who likes to know what's going on so I've done a fair bit of research on diabetes already but there's always more to learn. Everyone here seems friendly and between you you must know everything there is to know right? 😉
