Hello everyone,

I'm Gordon, and I was diagnosed about 3 months ago, at the age of 73, with type 2 Diabetes.

I am currently taking 2 separate tablets and Injecting Insulin once a day.

I have several other medical conditions but thus site is not the one to fill with them.

Happy to make contact.

Welcome @Gordon01 🙂 What are the names of your tablets and your insulin? How are you managing? A diabetes diagnosis can be a bit of a shock and take a while to get used to.

Hi Gordon and welcome from me too.

Would you mind telling us a bit about how you came to be diagnosed? Were you symptomatic or was id discovered via a routine blood test or perhaps some other means?

I am guessing your levels were very high to be started on insulin so soon. Do you know the result of your HbA1c test? This is the blood test which diagnoses diabetes and will usually be a number in excess of 47 but can be into 3 figures if things have gone seriously amiss. Your HbA1c at diagnosis is kind of your starting point with your diabetes journey and helps you and the medical staff assess how your management is going?

How are you managing with the insulin and testing?

Is there anything particular which brings you to the forum? ie. Do you have any particular questions or things you don't understand? Happy to help in any way we can. It can be pretty overwhelming at first, especially when you are started on insulin so soon. Comparing notes and chatting to others in the same boat here on the forum can really help you to feel more normal and less alone with it. At least I certainly find that.

I know that one of them is Gliclazide and the other starts with Met something.

Not sure what the insulin is but I inject 12 units each morning.

Seems really.daft, but I am petrified of injections but have injected myself every morning!!!

Metformin maybe? It’s not daft to be afraid of injections - lots of people are. Well done on injecting this morning 🙂

Both the insulin and the Gliclazide can potentially bring your blood sugar down too low (hypo) so do make sure you have some hypo treatments near you both in and out of the house. These can be things like Dextro glucose ‘tablets’, jelly babies, 150ml cans of regular (ie sugary) branded Coke.

Hi Inka. Thanks for the message. Yes although I am petrified of injection - let's be honest at 73 I must have had millions - I am finding it surprisingly easy to inject the insulin.

I do keep Jelly Babies and Lucozade in the house and in the car.

I hope you also have your test kit in the car and are aware of the rules about driving.

Yes Inka I carry my test kit with me in my "man" bag along with all the other medication I have to carry.
Yes have notified DVLA as required and have been told that every time I get in the car as the driver I MUST test.
