Hello all

I am new here, my son (15) was admitted to hospital last week with DKA, it was the first we knew that he had type 1 diabetes. It has been a VERY busy week with a lot to take in and process! He is home now and I think we are managing well.

Hi @theneils and welcome to the forum.

I agree, very sorry to hear your son was in hospital with DKA, I understand that would've been very scary for him, you and your family! It's good to hear though that he's back home with you now, and that you're all managing well 🙂

We have some information on our website on "Coping with caring for a child with type 1 diabetes", which might be useful: https://www.diabetes.org.uk/guide-to-diabetes/your-child-and-diabetes/caring-for-a-child. This is also a link to Type 1 Diabetes in general, goes over different aspects like what it is, how to manage, and info about young people and diabetes: https://www.diabetes.org.uk/diabetes-the-basics/types-of-diabetes/type-1

I know you've probably had so much information thrown at you in this past week, and don't want to add too much, but I'm just attaching a link to our Local Support Groups. If sometime in the future you'd be interested in meeting with other people living with diabetes: https://www.diabetes.org.uk/how_we_help/local_support_groups. Depending on your area, there are sometimes family support groups for parents managing type 1 diabetes with their child.

Please let us know if you have any particular Q's or anything 🙂

Thank you for your quick replies. We have received all of the education over this past week and he is now using a Dexcom sensor and omnipod pump - although we still have a huge amount of equipment for any pump failures! He was on Levemir and Novorapid insulin when we were injecting him, but now just the Novorapid.

I am still setting an alarm for every 3 hours overnight to check his BG - I know the sensor gives an alert - but I couldn't rely on him to wake to it - so me and his dad are very tired!!

He is taking it all in his stride, so I hope we can all adjust to the new normal quickly. I just worry that in the event of anything more serious than what we have had (low of 3.9, high 22), I will get a mind blank!

Which Dexcom does he have @theneils ? Some can be used with the Follow facility so you can see his blood sugar.

It's the g6 and we do follow, when the alarm goes off we only have to get up if it's low or high...generally then need the loo and take another half hour to get back to sleep!!

Welcome to the forum @theneils

I’ll tag in @Bronco Billy @Thebearcametoo and @Sally71 who frequent the forum quite often and have several years of experience with helping to juggle their kids BG levels.

Fire away with any questions you have too - nothing will be thought too obvious or ‘silly’

Hi Georgina. Sorry to hear about the diagnosis, but great to know that your son is taking it in his stride. The children often cope better than we do. 🙂

It may be that he is in a 'honeymoon' period at the moment. This means his pancreas is still producing some insulin, which will make it difficult to achieve an element of predictability, but that time will come, honest.

Low and high numbers can be scary, but a 2.9 is dealt with the same way as a 3.9, just with more glucose, and ditto for higher numbers, but with insulin, obviously. :D. If in doubt, call your team or, if it's out of hours and you haven't been given a number to call at those times, ring 111. If you're on Facebook groups, you can also ask there. You'll be surprised how many people are there even in the moiddle of the night.

Hi and welcome.

It’s a big adjustment and there will be lots of ups and downs. Try to go with the flow. The dexcom follow alarms are great and you can also link it to sugarmate which can send texts of automated phone calls which I use for hypos overnight as it’s more likely to wake me up than the alarms.

That would be ideal, but it's on apple and we are android!
