Hi, my name is Brian, and I was diagnosed Type2 in June this year. I am on diet and exercise at the moment. Have changed my diet drastically and have gone from 13 stone 3 at diagnosis, to 11 stone 12 this morning. Very pleased with that. I go for my first Hba1c test tomorrow, so hoping the results will be satisfactory. Still getting used to having this condition, but have accepted that things are going to be different from here on in. Unfortunately my practice is one of those that does not believe in T2's self testing, so will not prescribe test strips. If my test does not give good results, I may have to consider self funding to check my bg levels. Will keep you posted

Hi Brian, welcome to the forum 🙂 Great weight loss in such a short period, well done! Sorry to hear of the surgery's attitude to testing, I don't wish diabetes on anyone, but sometimes it would be good if they could realise and support the practical benefits of testing, particularly in the early months after diagnosis when you are trying to establish what compromises you may have to make with your diet.

Have a look at the 'sticky' at the top of this section for some useful links that may help. If you have any questions, please let us know and we will try to do our best to help! 🙂

p.s. I hope that the HbA1c test goes well!

Welcome to the forum Brian, you have done really well with the weight loss, there are plenty of type 2's on the forum, I,m sure they will give you help and advice. Best wishes Sheena🙂

Hi Brian,

Being just diet and exercise controlled is good. For me, it took the pressure of the testing requirement. Once I'd got a handle on how different foods affected me, I reduced my testing to just once a week on average (to make sure that nothing untoward is happening).

My pack of 50 strips has lasted me since 27th Febrauary and I still have 4 or 5 left (plus my brother used 4 or 5 when he was diagnosed recently).

My last HbA1c was 5.9, so this lack of testing is not a problem for me.

I'd still try and persuade your GP to prescribe some strips initially though. Just while you're trying to understand how your diet affects you.

Congrats with the weight loss. Hopefully, it's doing wonders for any insulin resistance that you may have been suffering from?

Andy 🙂

Hiya Brian,

Welcome to the forum! 🙂 Hope your test goes well 🙂 Good work on the weight lose! inspirational to me!! I weigh 15 stone 9 Lbs ..... God knows how im going to lose that! lol

xx

Thanks everybody for the warm welcome. All tests done today, but due to my own commitments, and the DN's, I do not see her for the results until 14th Sept. Just have to be patient I guess. Also has a session on foot health with her today, which was useful.(good skin condition, good pulse & sensation). The day after I get the results, we are off to the States for a "New England in the Fall" coach tour. Really looking forward to that, but I'm afraid my diet may suffer temporarily. Have to work that much harder on our return.

Hi Brian, couldn't you just call for the results or would you prefer to get them in person from the DSN? Good news about the feet! Jealous about your trip to the US - I bet it will be absolutely stunning, make sure you take lots of pictures! I'm sure you'll be OK for diet on the trip - those Americans are a really health-conscious bunch, aren't they? 😉 Try to keep to English-sized portions! 🙂

If i was american i would be dead lmao!!

As it's my first test, I would rather be face to face with her so she can explain the results and what they mean, and whether I need to be doing anything differently.

That's fair enough Brian, as long as she doesn't ban trips to the US 🙂 Hope the results are good, and reflect the great efforts you have made so far.

She wouldn't dare.......................................Would she?😱

Hi Brian,

Welcome to another T2 diagnosed in June. i too have been refused strips but have self funded in the initial few weeks. i have to say I am testing less and less now - as Andy also says. Its nice that your GP is seeing you to give you the results and allowing time for more chat. Can I suggest you also enquire about when your retinopathy eye test will be? You need one annually. My GP let me get to grips for a few months and has just put me forward for mine.

Your trip sounds lovely - enjoy it.

Hi Lucy, and thanks for the welcome. I have already had my eye screening and passed with flying colours, and no evidence of any retinopathy. I go for a 3 hour session on "Living with Diabetes" with the dietician and the DSN on October 13th, so will hopefully gain some useful info there. I have already been primed not to take too much notice of the advice to eat "plenty of carbs", and am already on a low carb diet, which seems to be working really well, at least as far as the weight loss is concerned.
