Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi, I have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes . This came as a shock to me back in July of this year. I have been put on Metformin and seem to be experiencing some problems with it. Very upset tummy and over the past week painful lower back pain. So much so it keeps me awake, pain killers only take the edge off for a little while. (I immediately changed my diet to a low carb on diagnosis and have dropped from 16 to 8s and have lost 14lbs... I am now 10st 6lbs) . I have been advised to reduce the intake of the Metformin by my Dr. Which sorted the upset tummy but the pain in my back seems to be increasing. I feel quite isolated and feel I am fighting this on my own. I guess I am not alone with these symptoms... what have you good folks done or experienced with similar side effects. Thanks in advance M

@Maggie18 Welcome to the forum. I don't use metformin but I know lots of people on the forum do, and it won't be long till you find an answer.

Hello @Maggie18 , welcome to the forum. I am glad your Metformin tum has cleared up with the reduction of Metformin. It’s been quite a while since I’ve been on Metformin, I don’t remember back pain as being one of its unpleasant side effects, I will look up the patient leaflet online.

I have often had lower back pain when I have a UTI (urinary tract infection) , it would be wise to see your Gp soon as the pain is getting worse, take a urine sample with you , of course their are other causes for back pain .

Please let us know how you get on.

I had a bad reaction to Metformin and stopped taking it, which helped a lot but it was some time before the effects subsided - my lower left leg hurt for some time, like 18 months, and to be absolutely honest, it is still a little weaker than the right one, but I was in such a wretched condition at Christmas 2016 that I really do count myself lucky to still be here, as I was planning suicide on a couple of occasions.
The aches and pains were miserable, and I felt such a relief stopping the tablets - one of Metformin one of Atorvastatin - that I would never take them again.
It was all the more galling to realise that I never needed them in the first place as in 80 days I was no longer diabetic, and I have stuck to eating low carb ever since.

Hello @Maggie18 , I am on 2 Metformin a day and have previously been on 4 but did not have any back ache, I would also recommend that you run this symptom by your doctor just to be on the safe side x

Hi and welcome to the forum Maggie. 🙂
I am surprised that your doctor did not put you on the slow release version of Metformin, it is generally better tolerated. That is what I was on for a while, without any side effects.
@Drummer I would not take any of the Statins under any circumstances, too many reports of the terrible side effects, particularly affecting mental state.

Hello and welcome. 🙂 Go to the docs, see what's what. Best be on the safe side in case it's not just muscular.
