I was diagnosed with Diabetes 2, 3 months ago. I am from the US and hope that it is okay to be in this group because I truly need the support. My A1C initial diagnosis number was 7.2. Was put on Metformin 1500 mgs per day 3 months ago. I also lost 15 lbs and at the 3 month visit, my A1C is 6.6.

I was hoping it would go down more than that due to all my weight loss and changing the foods I eat and wonder how I can get it down further. So many questions. I also have high blood pressure, LDL, etc.

Diabetes runs in my family: Uncle, father, brother and now me.

Thank you.

Hi @Jaqquie - welcome to the forum.

The A1C reflects roughly a three month average. As such there will be a bit of a lag in seeing the full effect of your efforts. That said yours has already gone from 7.2 to 6.6 so congratulations. If you keep on doing what you are doing there is a good chance in another three months it will be a bit lower.

Like many of the other Type 2's on this forum, the food changes I made was to reduce my carb intake eliminating: all sugar (cakes, biscuits) and refined carbs (rice, pasta, bread), most fruit (only have berries), cereals and fruit juices. For me that, together with lifestyle changes like better exercising, helped to get my HBA1c down.

Thank you @DiabloT2 for welcoming me to this forum. I appreciate your kind and inspiring words.
Also, I read your story. Wow, that is impressive!

I believe the numbers in Britain are different and am trying to find a calculator so that I can write things that will make sense to all here.

I will admit that I am feeliiing overwhelmed. High blood pressure, high triglycerides, and so much more. I hope I can do this.

Thanks again.

Welcome to the forum @Jaqquie

We’ve occasionally had US members over the years, but I’m not sure we have many other active US members at the moment.

Thanks for attempting to translate your results to make it easier for members here to understand.

Diabetes UK has an HbA1c converter on this page

though many members here with more years on the clock are quite used to % values. 😛

For fingerstick glucose values in mg/dl, you just need to divide by 18 to get the equivalent in mmol/L.

Hope that helps 🙂

The other difference here is that carbohydrate values for foods have the FIBRE component already deducted from the amount of carb per 100g but on US packaging the FIBER is included in that carbohydrate value. So when people here talk about having say 30g carbs per meal that would exclude the fibre. The clue is in the spelling. ER or RE.
