Hi I have been diabetic since I was 20 I’m now 43 and decided I need to talk to people as I don’t see many people now I lost my sight in 2017 and it was awful I had a 3 hour op at start of last year that didn’t work then had another which gave me some sight in one eye. But been suffering really bad with depression and anxiety since and now feel really lonely and fed up. So thought I would get on here and speak of my experience

Hi there

Sounds awful what you've gone through, but obviously welcome (not that I'm in any position to welcome people). I look forward to hearing more about your experience as someone who was only recently diagnosed.

Welcome to the forum Busadaddy, from a fellow T2.
Sorry to hear about your eyesight and everything.

Hi and welcome.

So sorry to hear of your sight loss. That must be very scary and isolating. So pleased you have found the forum to connect with other people who understand the frustrations of diabetes and share similar challenges and concerns. We have a few members who have had work done to help save or improve their sight and others facing other complications from their diabetes like neuropathy and Charcot Foot. We have a wide range of experience to share and it is good that you want to be part of that. There is a thread in the general messages called "Group 7-day waking average" where many of us check in each morning and post out morning fasting reading and share a bit of information about our day or thoughts on why our reading is not where we would like.... I have my morning coffee whilst reading the posts and catching up with how everyone is doing. Maybe you would like to join in tomorrow and get to know us a bit better. We sometimes like to have a bit of a laugh and banter with each other so please feel free to come and be part of that. It is a very long thread so don't feel like you need to read right through it, just post your reading tomorrow morning and maybe tell us if you have anything planned for the day or have a rant as to why your reading is not in range.

Do you have any technology to help you manage your diabetes like Freestyle Libre or a pump or are you on MDI? Which insulin(s) do you use? Do you have a good diabetes support team/consultant/nurses?
How are you managing with the current pandemic restrictions.... we have all been affected by changes in appointments etc but it must be more concerning with your sight problems.

Hope to hear more from you soon

Hello I haven’t had any support really just go to my 6 monthly checks . I was put forward for a course but then this COVID put a stop to that. I inject novo mix 30 twice a day and take metformin.

Hi and welcome @Busadaddy, glad you've joined us 🙂

Sight loss is an incredibly difficult thing to live through and live with. It is such a life changing thing. I hope you are adapting and getting some good help and support. I'm seen at a retina clinic and a low vision clinic where they have some excellent magnification aids. I'm in a similar place to you with sight loss and know how very hard it is to deal with and adapt. I hope you're doing as well as possible. Was your sight loss from retinopathy or glaucoma?

I'm blind in my left eye and just have central vision in my right- it is the most precious thing after not having any sight for about 1 year. It is an incredibly difficult and emotional thing to write about and discuss and is a very frightening and isolating complication but being on this forum has helped me so much with the support and kindness from others. I hope you find it as useful as I do.

Just realised that you are Type 2 with you mentioning that you use a mixed insulin. 20 is very young to be diagnosed with Type 2!
Were you significantly overweight at that time? Did they do any tests to check that you are not Type 1?
Can you tell us about how you came to be diagnosed? Were you suddenly ill or did it come to light through a blood test for something else or perhaps medication induced?.....

Sorry for all the questions but when something is unusual it helps to understand more about what went on in the past. Don't feel you have to answer any of those questions if you don't feel comfortable doing so.

Welcome to the forum @Busadaddy

Sorry to hear about what you have been going through.

Are you able to get additional support for your visual impairment? And for your depression?

It’s good that you have made contact with the forum. Feel free to share, rant, and ask away with any questions you may have - nothing will be considered silly 🙂

So sorry to hear how you are feeling so low @Busadaddy

Keep sharing here. And keep reaching out to your surgery - and do let them know if things are getting harder rather than easier.

Have you been offered and additional support from a psychologist or counsellor?
