My mother is 100 and has dementia. The district nurses give her one dose of insulin every day. Mum is difficult in allowing the nurses to prick her finger and now the GP has said they are going to stop the insulin. My concern is whether they put her back on Meformin which she was last on 5 years ago. Another concern is how will no insulin affect her. She is in reasonable good health and 2 years ago broke her hip twice in 9 months and had surgery to fix it. Any help would be fantastic.

I think a bit more information about her circumstances, like is she Type 1 or Type 2, how long has she been on insulin and what particular insulin is it and what diet does she have.
If she has needed to go onto insulin I suspect that is because other oral medications were not working.
You might find having a chat with the Diabetes UK helpline (the number is at the top) as they may be able to advise on what rights you have in terms of your threat by the GP.

Sorry to hear about your Mum’s difficulties with her diabetes treatment.
Do you know the name of the insulin she has been taking (including any letters or numbers).
I wonder if it might be a single dose of a long-acting insulin that is helping to gently reduce your Mum’s glucose levels during the day?
People’s glucose levels generally increase slightly with age in any case, and there is research that suggests pushing too hard to reduce them can have negative consequences and adverse health outcomes. Without the insulin your Mum’s glucose levels are likely to run slightly higher, but it may be that she can help matters by reducing the amount of carbohydrate in meals (cutting out sweet and sugary things, but also reducing portion sizes of potatoes, grains, bread, rice, pasta, and non-berry fruits)
There have been a number of new diabetes medications that have gained popularity over the past 5 years, so it might be that there are new oral or injectable meds she could try?
