welcome along. my dad is 89 this year and a long term diabetic on insulin, he has no awareness at all of his sugars, that has got worse with age, the Freestyle Libre is a big help though being able to just check your levels with 1sec swipe over your arm sensor.

Unstable probably wrong, should have said inconsistent and more typical of a peak and fade effect. It is Insulatard and the consultant has said there are newer ones now which can maintain a flat line basal level throughout 24 hours. Sound better than worrying about peaks and troughs of basal as well as rapid insulin.

I used to get awful basal peaks when I was on Lantus, and they were completely unpredictable as well. Switching to Tresiba has been a big help: I still have far too many hypos, but at least they're predictable, and I'm no longer wondering whether my basal's suddenly going to start working overtime in the middle of the night. Tresiba is very much more stable/consistent.
