Type 2
Hello,

I'm newly diagnosed Type 2. Been veggie for decades (by choice) and Coeliac for almost 5 years. Since being diagnosed Coeliac I've managed to eat some fish so not properly veggie anymore. I'm also allergic to Seafood/shellfish and raw onion. Not surprisingly I'm really confused what to eat. My first appointment (after a hospital stay) has been made for 6 weeks post hospital. So I'm flying solo and unsure what to do.

Are there any other Coeliac veggie/fish eaters with T2 out there or am I alone in this world of restrictive eating?

I don't really know what to eat at all. I can't stop falling asleep especially after a tiny gluten free egg sandwich and an apple. Wondering if I can't eat bread anymore but without being given finger pricks I haven't a flaming clue. In hospital they were pricking me lots but told I couldn't do that at home. What a stupid system. I'd like to really understand what I can and cannot eat. I was told to excercise which I did before hospital but now im so very very tired i cannot even walk my dogs without being exhausted. I'm a bit fed up now. I don't know what to eat and I want to excercise but I'm exhaused all the time, not just after lunch. In hospital my finger prick readings were way over the permitted limit despite just eating a sensibly chosen set of 3 meals and no snacks.

Any advice welcome. Thanks in advance.

Hi LL a warm welcome to the forum. I think @Pumper_Sue is coliac can't be sure but she can correct me. X

Welcome to the forum, Loobyloo. You're right that it is very difficult to decide what to eat without testing your own blood glucose. If your GP won't give you one, nor prescribe strips, you can buy a meter and buy your own strips. The Code Free meter has cheapest strips available - around £7 for 50 strips.

Hello LoobyLou and welcome 🙂

I'm a fish-eating not quite veggie too, and I have multiple food intolerances (though not to gluten) so I know how it feels treading a minefield between what you are supposed to eat and what you are actually able to eat. You will get the hang of things, but it may take a while, so try not to worry too much at first - I would be surprised if you weren't feeling confused and exhausted when you've only just been diagnosed.

Good things to eat include fish, nuts, cheese, eggs, leafy vegetables, and berries. Things to cut down on and only eat in moderation include fruit other than berries, starchy vegetables (like carrots, parsnips, and of course potatoes), brown/granary bread, brown rice. Things to avoid include pizza, pasta, dried fruit, white bread/rice, and honey. I'm sure other people will be along with more ideas shortly, and other type 2s will have more ideas than I do, as I don't have to be quite as careful, being on insulin.

You have hit the nail on the head when you say that type 2s not being allowed to test is a stupid system. You might be able to convince your diabetes team and/or your doctor that they should give you a meter and test strips so that you can test, for the reasons you've given. If not, then I would do what a lot of people here do and buy your own - it will help you work out what foods you can or can't tolerate (and this varies quite a bit from person to person so you really need to do it for yourself).

I was just about to look up the name of the meter when Copepod's post appeared - that's the one! I think you can get it and the strips on Amazon? - no doubt someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

Good luck, and please ask if you have any questions - someone here is likely to be able to help.

Thank you, thank you ever so much for all the support so far. I will ask for a meter thing at least for 3 months so i know what is dangerous to me and what is not. If you don't ask... meanwhile if I have to purchase myself (i hope not Grrr) the strips are available on amazon (great, not sure what they are called, but will get there) but the meter thing (thank you Copepod) where do I purchase that if I need to?

Thanks again and do please keep replying. Its cheered me up.

I hope Pamper Sue will be along soon. Thanks for that tip.

ps I tried to upload an avatar/photo but I couldnt find how to do it. Any tips? Really basic help required aha. Thanks.

sorry to post again but I found the link by someone else to the meter and strips etc etc on amazon, in another thread. Forgotten name already so can't thank them.

It is a great meter LoobyLoo, I used it for 9 moths and found testing invaluable for finding out what spiked my blood sugars the most. I would definitely recommend getting one.

@Northerner is the guy to know how to help you with this but don't think he will be about tonight though.

Do you have the picture you want to use as an avatar on your computer, LoobyLou? If so, just scroll up to the top of the page and find where it says your name, top right. Click on your name and lots of profile information comes up. Click where it says avatar and you should get the option to browse and find your picture and upload it. I'm not sure what you do if you want to use a picture from elsewhere, as I'd have to delete mine to see the alternatives, but Northerner would be able to tell you, as Steff says.

I just noticed on another thread that @Amberzak is Coeliac, so she might be able to help you with some ideas of what you can/can't eat.

Click on your name at the top of the page and then click on 'avatar'. From there you can choose a portrait photo or any other photo from your photo library.

I seem to recall that someone said somewhere at some time (Very helpful LOL) that gluten free bread, is quite high carb. You see Looby - carbohydrate is the very thing all our bodies have trouble dealing with, if we're diabetic. It doesn't particularly matter where that cab is - whether it's in fructose (in fruit) sucrose (in sugar) or flour or spuds, BUT 'highly refined' carb is positively the worst kind - such as white flour (think of how much wheat has to be processed to turn it into the fine white dust Homepride sells) - ditto what they do to rice after picking it in the paddy field, to turn that into rice grains we can boil and eat, then into rice flour, etc.

You'll be able to eat SOME carbohydrate without dire effects - but how much of which sorts - ONLY a meter can tell a person that - because every one of us is slightly different what we can and can't tolerate. There's no 'one size fits all' for this.

Ooh thank you for both these bits of info. I will work on it this week. Looking forward to Amberzak popping in. Or if not me somehow contacting her. Thanks again. Appreciate it.

I replied to you then afterwards discovered how to reply with a quote (doh). So thanks again, this is really really helpful info esp as GF bread is often made with white rice. Makes sense now. xx
