Hello anyone,

I have known that I have had diabetes for ten years but have been terribly slapdash about it till today. My latest tests were not too good and it is time to treat this thing with the respect it is due I guess.

Anyone else been through a long period of denial? I hope it's a normal reaction!

Anyway, I live in Somerset, work in a local aircraft factory and enjoy all the things I shouldn't.

Looking forward to the summer and some time at the beach.

I'm a silly 60 but still love sandcastles! Sad or what?

Regards to everyone.

Hello and welcome. I love Somerset - for years it was just somewhere to pass through en route to somewhere else then I stopped and had a look around. There are various levels of denial. To have made ten years you cannot have been at maximum denial as I know of people who survived for only a few years. Hopefully you are free of any major complications. What tests were bad; HbA1c, cholesterol, U&Es, liver function, creatanin?

Best of luck with the control.

By the way do they still race motorcycles on the beach at Weston?

welcome to the forum ...i love the beach aswell last year we were near westward ho! now that is some beach ...I know its North Devon... but its close to Sommerset x🙂

From a debrief by the practice diebetes nurse it seems that my cholesterol is over 5 and my long term sugar reading is 12. Have to see the doctor in a week or two for a lecture and a telling off.

On two tablets a day but how long that will last I don't know.

And yes, they still race motorcycles on the beach at Weston and it's as crazy as ever 🙂

Hi beachlover,

Sorry to hear about your situation. You will know yourself already that an HbA1c of 12 is way too high. Now is the time to take control of your diabetes before things get any worse. You know it makes sense!

Personally, I got worse for eight years before I learnt what to do to reverse my Type 2 diabetes. Despite that deterioration, I've achieved a lot over the last eighteen months. over nine years ago. All my numbers are now quite superb and certainly better than they were at diagnosis.

In my case, changing my diet was amazingly powerful in improving my condition.

Good luck and best wishes - John

Hello Beachlover, I'm from Somerset too - over on the edge of the Levels. Lovely misty sunrise today, looking over towards the river.

I'm 2 years older than you and was diagnosed 18 months ago at the Musgrove, Taunton. Great team, things have gone a bit wobbly just recently but I was told that would happen as my pancreas gave up completely.

I still find adjusting to the fact that I have to think aboout my food, what I'm allowed and what I'm not - and it still gets me down but this forum is great for helping with advice. Use us to rant at, ask anything - someone else will have either experienced it first hand or heard something about your question.....most of all good luck.🙂

Hi there, in my opinion, you are NEVER too old to enjoy the seaside, sandcastles and all!! Love it, love it, love it!! Wish you well.🙂
