Relationship to Diabetes
Hello there Everyone.

My name's Galen and I'm a 59 year old babyboomer from Singapore. Been on paleo and LCHF since 2008 when I found out that my risk of Type 2 diabetes was extremely high since both my elderly parents are stricken with the disease. So far my health has been pretty good & fasting blood glucose is okay at 4.9. Other blood lipids are ok as well.

I'm here to learn from you folks because I'm having a tough time trying to convince both of my elderly parents, father: 89 and mother: 87 to go LCHF but my efforts have been futile. My parents are very stubborn & insists on listening to the doctor who dishes out the usual c**p advice: lots of whole grains, low fat foods etc.

Thanks & Cheers,
Galen

Welcome Galen, i'm sure you will get sound advice from the great group on here.

Hi Galen and welcome. You seem to be doing very well with your control. It can be hard to change lifelong eating habits and I have to say your parents are doing very well to be late 80's so they are doing something right! 🙂

Thanks, Ian. I need all the advice I can get to help my parents regain their health & do away with the meds. It's a long shot I know since they are already so old.

Hi Galen Welcome. Im thinking you probably won't be successful in persuading your parents , I don't know about Singapore but here in the UK my parents generation were brought up to virtually worship doctors, there word was law.
Apart from the Diabetes ,how is your parents health.

Hi Linda, I guess the thought of ending like my parents with huge bags of medication was motivation (or fear I should say) enough for me to keep LCHF going. Well, my parents are surviving because with all the medications they're on & not because they're healthy - both had T2D since their early 60s and had strokes in their 70s.

I know age has got to do with it but I've met some folks in their 80s, great health, no meds & their only issues were they can't walk as fast as they used to in their 70s. Haha,

Hi Ljc, you said it! My parents are doctor worshippers too! Guess it doesn't differ much in location or ethnicity. LOL Both of them started having T2D in their early 60s, had strokes in their 70s so all things being equal, and with their bags of medicine every day, they're sort of surviving I guess.

Warm welcome to the forum gkhchay .

Welcome to the forum Galen. :D My Mum's 82, I think at that age it would be too harsh to try and change her eating habits. She's always been sensible anyway...I'm the one with D.

Hey Ditto,

Thanks for the warm welcome. Unfortunately my parents aren't haha. I've been nagging them on their unhealthy eating habits for 8 years! Hospital stays in the ICU didn't change a thing unfortunately.:(

Cheers,
Galen

I don't think nagging does any good, people have to want to do it for themselves. I read somewhere that nagging causes stress and heart disease! 😱 I'm the world's worst nagger, I must stop it, I'll be killing my family off. :D

You're absolutely right - nagging doesn't change a thing except getting my blood pressure up..
Every time one of them gets admitted to hospital, my brothers and I are like,"oh boy, here we go again!" :(

whats a babyboomer?
