Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hello, as you may have noticed I live in Scotland on the coast its nice and quiet here and good for walks when the sun is shining which has been unusually a lot this summer.

I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes a few weeks ago after I developed an intense hunger and no energy. I had an HBA1c of 62 with the instruction to lose some weight and improve my diet.

Its been a few weeks now and I have done some research, I decided to cut my carbs by half and get out whenever I can for a walk, its difficult to do though because I am a full time carer and don't have a lot of personal time. However I have lost around 6 lbs in weight and dropped 1 inch off my waist so far. I also decided that although I don't qualify for test strips, that I would buy my own meter and strips because I wanted to know how food was effecting me. I use the sd codefree meter and strips because they are cheap. Its working though and my Blood Glucose levels have remained in the safe range for the last 2 weeks. Only time it goes above safe is when I try different or unknown foods. Its trial and error for now I suppose.

Sorry about the long post you can rest your eyes now (those of you who are still with me )😛

Hi Jim. welcome to the forum 🙂 Sorry to hear about your diagnosis, but it sounds as though you are already well-informed and making good progress at getting your levels under control 🙂 Well done on your weight loss also!

Personally, I think that, even if you are a diet-controlled Type 2, you should still be prescribed a supply of test strips - as you have found it is an essential tool to use in understanding your diabetes, and how different foods and activities affect you. Not testing means you are just guessing and hoping.

There are some links to good sources of information in our 'Useful Links' thread, so have a browse. Particularly recommended is Type 2 Diabetes: The First Year by Gretchen Becker, so try and get hold of a copy if you can 🙂

Please feel free to ask anything you are unsure of, everyone is very friendly and happy to help, and no question is considered 'silly'! 🙂

I look forward to hearing more from you.

Welcome to the firum Jim 🙂

Thanks for the welcomes, my next hba1c test and review is in October, so I am trying to lose enough weight to make a difference and to try and bring my results down a wee bit. I have to say the doctor and practice nurse have been very good with me so far. I have an appointment in a couple of weeks for the podiatrist. I am waiting for my referral date for DESMOND and also my eye screening. I dont know how long you usually wait for these to come through but i hope it is soon because I have a regular eye check up at my optician in October and would rather have the screening done by then.

I was also told that my cholesterol was slightly elevated but not worryingly so, hoping that my diet will improve that too.

It's amazing what weight loss can do. I lost the first 4 stone in 6 months, and my HbA1c came down to 5.9. I hope yours responds like that. Good luck!

Hi Jim & welcome to you from bonny Scotland ! (good place to B) 🙂

Thanks again for the welomes, I do love Scotland Hobie specially where I am its so quiet and peaceful. A funny thing just happened to me today, I tested as per usual just before my dinner it was 5.6. I had a meal of 2 slices of low carb quiche and a oven cooked chicken breast with a parsley, olive oil, pepper and garlic rub. 2 hours post meal and my test result was 5.6. Surely it should have read higher, has anyone else had this where there readings are exaclty the same after a meal?

I would call that good control 🙂

Hi Jim, Welcome from another type 2, living in the Highlands.

Thanks, don't know if it is good control or if it was a fluke lol. I have been to the highlands in my youth, me and a few friends decided to walk up the tourist path of Ben Nevis... Tourist Path? really? It should be very fit tourist path. Actually we enjoyed it and we were very lucky to have a clear day and the view was stunning. The next sumer we decided to walk up Snowdon only to find a railway track going up to the summit, If only I had of known.
