Hello,
Just joined and taking a little look around......which is useful and interesting.
My name is Donna, i'm 33 years young and I was diagnosed with type 1 Jan 2009, had symptoms for about 6-8 weeks but it was a complete surprise and a lot to get my head around.

Got it pretty much under control but still have times where it appears to change. Good to read others experiences.

Donna :D

Hi Donna, welcome to the forum.

Learning curve

Thanks for the warm welcome. I'm finding this site really interesting, reading all the messages and replies.

One thing that has really made me think is the insulin / carb ratio, when I was diagnosed in Jan 09 I was put on a med acting insulin and injected twice a day. I then had to go on to novorapid during the day and detemir at night. Of course I have always been aware that carbs impact on blood sugars and different carbs are released in different ways. My consultant prescribed my insulin and told me to try 5 units before food and to 'play around' with that. I have never been told how to work out carb / insulin ratio..........can anyone help with this?

Currently i'm injecting around 6-8 units before breakfast, 8 before lunch and between 10 - 12 at tea. It feels like the above works most of the time and then sometimes not at all. I'm getting married next year and would like to lose a bit of weight and maybe carb counting will help.

D x
