Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi I'm Caron, I was diagnosed Type 2 December 2008. I am Metformin controlled. Not entirly happy with my blood sugar levels but happy enough with my Hba1c, and aware of what I'm doing wrong.

I'm making mistakes with my own Diabetes at the moment because I am putting all my efforts in to caring for my daughter. Diagnosed Type 1 four months ago, she is taking it all so wonderfully well I can't help but be proud of her. Her headmaster said on her final report from her primary school "She is a role model for all others with her condition", and he's not one for saying nice things!

I hope to make some friends here, with people who don't hate me because I'm Type 2 and some other parents of Type 1's.

......So Hello All 🙂

Hi there Caron welcome to the forum so sorry to hear of your double whammy so to speak m ust be very difficult as of course theres many diffirences in type 1 and 2 must have alot on your plate, by the sounds of it your daughter is taking it in her stride how old is she ?,have a good browse around we have an excellent preants section which im sure you will be relate to almost everything in there.I can guarenteee you nobody in here will HATE you.Can I ask you mention people hating you who is that?X

It was actually a triple whammy, my Dad was diagnosed Type 2 a few weeks ago also! Yes the whole family is reeling!

I know hate is a strong word, but I often get that impression about type 2's from a lot of sources, maybe not directed at me personally, the whole 'brought it on yourself' thing gets a little depressing at times. Last Christmas our Scouts were collecting money for our local mayors charity which included DiabetesUK, several of us were told "I hope that money goes to the other charities on those fat ******** who have brought their problems on themselves" and words to that effect!

I am shocked at that..........those people will no doubt be effected by diabetes in th near future, someway or another........

Hello and welcome to the forum from me.

I think the general public needs a little gentle education (I certainly did before being diagnosed).

There are so many routes to suffering from diabetes and not all of them involve an unhealthy lifestyle. In my case, lifestyle was definitely a contributing factor. Now that the excess weight is coming off, I am more able to control my blood sugars.

However, I know that it isn't as simple as that for some other type 2's and all type 1's.

Anyway, welcome to the forum! Again!! :D

Andy 🙂

Hi Caron, welcome to the forum 🙂 That's pretty appalling to be treated that way - you'll certainly not get any of that here! It's a shame that the public's perception of diabetes is so warped by unthinking and inaccurate campaigns that portray it as some sort of 'lifestyle choice'. Very sorry to hear that you and your scouts had to hear such hurtful prejudice.

All we can do is try and educate when we can, so stay strong and don't let ignorance upset you. People can be very cruel when they think they are somehow immune to whatever it is they are mocking, but as we all know, diabetes can strike anyone, anytime.

Sorry to hear of the diagnosis of your daughter and father :( There are a couple of good books that might help them both (and you!), if you've not already heard of them:

For your daughter:
Type 1 Diabetes in Children, Adolescents and Young Adults by Ragnar Hanas. It will explain everything you need to know about living with Type 1.

For you and your father:
Type 2 Diabetes: The First Year by Gretchen Becker - highly recommended by many of our members!

Looking forward to hearing more from you!

I'm a bit of a bookworm, so here are a

Hi Caron, welcome to the forum.

It's a sad fact of life that the general public's perception of all type 2 diabetics are of obese couch potatoes who sit at home stuffing themselves full of saturated fat and have never done any exercise in their entire lives. The media don't exactly help either.

I for one used to lead a very active life sports wise doing athletics, cycling and playing tennis all the time until various injuries put an end to it and I wasn't over weight and didn't have an unhealthy diet either, but I was diagnosed as a type 2 three months before my 39th birthday.

I have 2 colleagues at work who are also type 2 and could not be remotely classed as being overweight, so that kinda proves how ignorant people can be by making assumptions about type 2's.

There of course are type 2's who are over weight due to being on insulin and others that are over weight due to other issues such as mobility problems and not related to over eating or lack of exercise at all.

It just goes to show that people should not judge others when they don't know the individuals particular circumstances.

Although it annoys me when I read crap about type 2's I tend to just ignore it and pity people for their own ignorance.

Sorry to hear about your daughter and dad being diagnosed with diabetes as well, must have been a real shock.

Hope you find the forum a source of support like the rest of us.

Take care. Phil🙂

hi lilac and welcome ...wooo lots of dx stuff going on hope you enjoy the forum ...my attitude to those who go on about obesity and T2 is to remind them that there are alot more of obese people who do not have T2 ....
