Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi, I have just found this forum. I think I am having to admit that I have typoe 2 diabetes. I have taken it as a personal insult and instead of dealing with it have been denying it. So would be interested on any advice you have.

Hi Marina, welcome to the forum! It can take a little while to get used to the idea. Keep reading and posting here - there are some lovely people who would be very happy to answer your questions, or if you want to have a good old rant at what life has dealt you, that's OK too. You are amongst friends who understand how you must be feeling.

Marina, welcome to the forum. All I can say is I understand how you can see type 2 diabetes as a personal insult but unlike verbal insults we cannot put diabetes out of our minds (even with much work) and deny it without causing ourselves harm. I'm unclear from your post about whether you have been diagnosed formally or not or simply have some signs and symptoms. If you haven't yet seen your GP then do make an appointment and go. If you have already seen him or her and got a firm diagnosis then let us know what areas you need some help on and people on here will let you know what has worked for them

Hi Marina,

Welcome to the forum...I think denial is part of the process towards accepting the diagnosis. Your in the right place here, everyone is friendly and happy to help in anyway they can.

Welcome Marina!

Hi Marina!

Its always nice to have new people chatting on the forum and welcome to the site. Its nice to have you here.

I am sorry to hear that you feel it hard to accept your Type 2 diabetes, and perhaps a bit difficult to admit to. This is not uncommon and if you scroll through some threads you will see this theme. Diabetes is hard for both types to accept and it is unfortunate we have to deal with the public perceptions and stereotypes od diabetes that can lead us to feel this way and the diagnosis itself.

The good news is, as northerner said, there are many people on here who you can chat to and have a good old rant. Chances are when you let rip, we understand exactly how you feel and you are among your own here! Support doesnt always always come with the answers but from knowing people understand exactly how you feel.

Hope you find this site useful, informative, supportive and fun. It has helped me immensly.

Take good care of yourself Marina, and I hope we hear from you soon!

Love louisa x

Hello and Welcome to the forum Marina 🙂🙂:D

Hi Vanessa, yes I have been formally diagnosed but was hoping that I could control it by diet, which would have been a miracle I suppose as I couldn't control my weight by diet. Anyway my doctor said that I would be no good at the diet route so take the pills, which made me mad. Anyway about 4 weeks ago I started taking the pills. My level is now '8' the problem I have is knowing what to eat. I am better at not eating regularly which I now know is a problem. So any advice on this score would be gratefully received.

Hi Marina

I felt the same as you after I was diagnosed last September. www.diabetes.org.uk have lots of advice on diet and what you can and cant eat (although everything in moderation I say). I've also just ivested in Gretchen Beckers book - Type 2 Diabetes - The First Year - an essential guide for the newly diagnosed and although I have only just started reading it I think its great. Cost me ?6.49 from Amazon. And of course - ask away on here - that's what I did and found an incredible support group.

I would second what corrine says if you have a look at the the recommended book section i think they may be some books that people have already read and reviewed that might be of help . i tend to find a snack is invaluble to me fruit and raisins are my snack but raisins at a small level , fruit well i have about 6 pieces a day fills a gap to my meal and is healthy so cant lose x

Marina - it took me over a year before I got my brain around what worked for me so please be kind to yourself and remember what you have achieved in getting to 8 in the first place. Becker's book has been mentioned by others and it really has been an immense help to me in getting to the stage that I could work out what food intake was right for me - I've learnt so much from this site that it does vary quite significantly for each of us. Also aware that what is working for me at the moment may not be the same as what will work for me in a year or so's time

As I've slowly got the blood glucose swings under better control I've found it far easier to manage my appetite and to eat more regularly. Initially I found it better to eat 5 or 6 times a day but now tend to have a light breakfast, mid morning fruit snack, lunch and dinner with occasional need for a nibble of something before bed - something I'm hoping will lessen as I've been able to reduce some of the medication. My GP now thinks I will should be able to come off the gliclazide eventually as I am losing weight and doing more exercise which is a far sight better than his initial assessment that I would be on insulin fairly rapidly

I found I've needed to take things at my own pace though as I've learnt more about the diabetes, my body and read widely about the various theories on diet.
