Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi I am Jay and I have diabetes type 2 for 16 years - I have been on insulin for 13 years. I knew about this site for some time but just did not get round to joining it as the Diabetic Care Unit I attend at my local hospital are very good. I always found their advise and knowledge very useful and it had helped me to manage my diabetes very well. However, they still encouraged me to join so here I am.

Hi Jay, your very welcome

Hi and welcome to the forum. This place is great for help and advice about all things, not just diabetes.

Hi Jay, welcome to the forum - glad you decided to join! 🙂 Good to hear that you have received good care from your team 🙂 I think it's always good to hear about the experiences of others as well though, so hope you find the forum helpful and friendly 🙂 What insulin are you on?

Hi - thank you all for your welcome.
I am currently on Insulatard/Novomix and Novorapid. It took sometime trying to understand how to use the insulin and it wasn't until about 3 years ago that the Diabetes Care Unit at my local hospital ran a course on Insulin Management. This was a 2 day course and it explained a lot about the diet, the types of insulin and how you use the insulin depending on your readings before and after meal. Initially I was just advised the dosage that was prescribed irrespective of the reading you take before and after meals. After having been on the course, I was advised to vary the dosage based on your readings and through this I manage to control my sugar levels much better than before.

I realized that the course I attended was the first of its kind in the country and I am not sure if it is rolled out to all but I found this course was best in terms of managing your insulin and your sugar levels.

I have tried to go on all the courses laid on by the Diabetes Care at my local hospital and it has been very helpful.

That's quite an unusual insulin combination, but if it works well for you then that's great 🙂 I think there are very few courses available for Type 2s on insulin - many healthcare professionals believe that carb counting and dose adjustment isn't practical for Type 2s - which is, of course, rubbish! We've had quite a few T2 members here in the past who have complained about this. Good to hear your team are so forward thinking 🙂
