Hello to everybody, from Turin, Italy.

I've just found this forum in English about diabetes.
To manage diabetes I take metformin and statins and try to control my diet, that was given me by a dietician. The result are quite good, I've fasting BG and HBa1C that are in the normal range.
Unfortunately in the last two month I relaxed a bit and I started to gain weight slowly but steadily.
Staying away from ice creams and pizza is HARD, especially when you are with friends...
I decided to return to follow strictly the diet for losing weight and see what happens.

Unfortunately SSN(*) doesn't give me test strips, so I buy them, and the GP seems quite happy with the lab results every three months. I'll start to follow this forum to get advices and talk about diabetes.
See you later.

(*)SSN is like the NHS but for Italy

Hi Mike and welcome to the forum.

Welcome, I travel to Manerbio near Brescia on a regular basis. It will be good to hear about diabetes care from an Italian perspective.

Welcome! The problem I found with been too strict on myself was that I could not maintain it long term! I have found that by trying to reduce the amount of carbhydrates I eat and reduce portions has been sustainable for me! I have been the most stable over the last nearly 3 years using this approach! This is blood sugars and my weigh has gradually dropped off , I nearly have a BMI of 25 which I did not even have when I was more strict!

I can't imagine how hard it must be to hold back on pizza and ice cream in Italy! Good luck with losing the weight and welcome to the forum.

Welcome Mike and good luck getting back in control. Though I'm not a pizza fan the ice cream would torment me!

Thank you. I've tried to make ice creams without sugar at home, but the results weren't so good. So for now no more ice creams.

I've found that being strict works for losing weight, but not for maintaining it. Now I've to lose some, but I have to find a sustainable diet regime.

Yes I agree. I'd rather do without than have something that's not quite the real thing!

Welcome, Mike.🙂

Welcome Mike

Welcome to the forum. Well, it looks like you know what you need to be doing! I too have been gaining weight again slowly over the last two years as well. Like you, I'm on the weight loss trail again. I've already felt the benefits after some progress. Not least that I can wear my trousers comfortably again!!

Andy 🙂
