Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
I am a type 2 diabetic, having been diagnosed almost two years ago. Over the past two years my doctor has monitored my blood sugar levels and regularly increased my prescriptions for metformin and glicazide. I never got my blood sugar levels under control until I purchased a FreeStyle Libre system. It only took me one day of using Libre to understand that I needed to drastically change my eating habits. Now my levels are much lower and in range for most of the day. I'm having some challenges with the Dawn Effect and am hoping to draw from others experience in helping me. Thanks.

welcome Peter - I think you are right - the libre can be a real eye opener! The dawn effect is a pain and hard to deal with - I know there have been some great tips on here in the past. Hopefully someone with a better memory will be along with advice.
Where about are you in Canada?

Welcome Peter. I visited Canada a few years ago and started in Toronto, finishing in the West in Victoria. Beautiful country and lovely people.
This is a fantastic forum and you’ll get a lot of help.

Welcome Peter from a fellow T2 who's 3 years in.

The Libre give so so much info & shows where things affect you. Costs but education. Welcome Peter 🙂

Hi Peter, welcome to the forum.
The info the Libre give is so good isn’t it.

Here's some thoughts on Dawn Phenomenon @Peter Burdon

What have you tried so far?
I've tried eating a few slices of turkey within minutes of waking up and taking my 50mg of metformin. I tried this today but it didn't work very well, as my BG rose to 9 mmol/L and stayed there for a few hours. I just read the info you posted and will try eating a tablespoon of peanut butter before I head off to bed. Thanks

What was it before though?

Good pre-bed snack for this purpose, Peter - carb, protein and fat. Someone on another forum swore by a tiny oatcake (4-5g carb) buttered, with a bit of cheddar (high fat, hard) cheese on top, nightly eaten as he walked upstairs to bed after locking up for the night.

Had some success today after consuming a spoonfull of penaut butter around midnight. My sugar stayed around 7 all night long and only rose to 8 for about a half hour this morning. I consumed an additional teaspoon of peanut butter as soon as I woke this morning. This along with medication seemed to work well.

Welcome Peter. I enjoyed my stay in Canada. At present I have only been to Toronto and Niagara so far but hope to put that right at some stage. Some friends of ours went to Nova Scotia and my cousin's son went to Vancouver and west Canada with an Alaskan cruise too.

Hope you find the Forum helpful. I certainly have.
