I'm new here, but not new to Type 2 Diabetes. I was diagnosed in 2004 (Fasting 9.0/A1c 6.4) and used Metformin initially. I have not always been compliant.
Lately my fasting was 10.0 and my A1c had risen to 7.6, so I insisted on seeing a specialist. The internist put me on Glyburide, which worked fairly well, but I began to get blurry vision almost immediately. We have not yet determined if the blurred vision was a side effect of Glyburide or an effect of my vision improving enough to make my prescription lenses ineffective.
This week my diabetes specialist (I was SO happy to see one) took me off Glyburide and put me on Rapaglinide, as he felt I was the sort of person who could manage it. i.e. I always count my carbs, and measure blood sugar levels multiple times each day.
Regulating Rapaglinide takes a lot of work, but I'm close to getting it right. This morning my fasting was 6.5, my peak (at 45 minutes) was 9.8 and my 2 hour was 5.9.
Choosing the correct amount of medication with Rapaglinide is a real hit-and-miss exercise, but I am getting close. For me, taking 0.5mg for each 10 grams of carbohydrates, then adding one extra pill to the total seems to get me very close. Also, it is extremely important to take the pills at LEAST 15 minutes before eating. 20 minutes is even better.
I'd be very interested in hearing the experiences of other people taking Rapaglinide, as well as any tips about using it.
